Miss USA has changed some of its rules
Miss USA 2024 will be the first contest under a new set of rules aimed at modernizing the pageant. For the first time, any adult woman can compete for the Miss USA title, regardless of age.
Previously, Miss USA contestants had to be under the age of 28. A 2022 rule change allowed married women and mothers to compete. The 2024 Miss USA delegates include a married woman (Miss Maine USA), a transgender woman (Miss Maryland USA), and a woman over the age of 40 (Miss Arizona USA).
The Miss USA pageant has been mired in controversy
The 2024 Miss USA pageant comes a few months after Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt stepped down in May 2024. Miss Teen USA 2023 UmaSofia Srivastava resigned soon after.
In Voigt’s resignation letter, she described the Miss USA organization as a “toxic work environment … that, at best, is poor management and, at worst, is bullying and harassment,” NBC News reported.
Voigt said the organization did not respond appropriately when she reported an incident of sexual harassment. Voigt also accused Miss USA CEO and President Laylah Rose of “weaponizing” the mental health issues she’d faced since being crowned.
Miss USA initially responded to Voigt’s resignation with an Instagram post that did not directly address her allegations.
“We respect and support Noelia’s decision to step down from her duties,” it read. “The well-being of our titleholders is a top priority, and we understand her need to prioritize herself at this time.”
In an open letter published on May 30, Rose wrote that the “allegations of sexual harassment, toxic environment and bullying are not true.”
The latest controversy came after several years of negative publicity for the Miss USA pageant, from its association with former owner Donald Trump to claims that past president Crystle Stewart had rigged the 2022 competition in favor of winner R’Bonney Gabriel. Gabriel went on to win the 2022 Miss Universe pageant. She was the first American woman to hold the title since 2012.
