The red jumpsuits are one of the most iconic staples from Netflix’s Money Heist (La Casa de Papel). When the heist robbers took over the Royal Mint of Spain and the Bank of Spain, they often wore red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks. While the outfit remains a prominent staple piece in the series, some Money Heist cast members despised the red jumpsuits.

The red jumpsuits became an essential part of the show’s storyline

The red jumpsuits in Money Heist have become a fashion statement on and off the screen. Not only is the attire worn by the main characters, but it’s often imitated at cosplay events and Halloween parties. The signature look is present throughout the series, from the robbers themselves sporting the gear to the hostages being forced to wear it. But, the red jumpsuits go beyond a particular fashion choice – it allows the robbers to evade the authorities from their first heist at the Royal Mint of Spain to the Bank of Spain. The ensemble enables the robbers to move around without being seen and keep their identities a secret with the Salvador Dalí mask.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, the Money Heist cast shared their opinion about the red jumpsuits. For the past five seasons, the main characters have worn the ensemble during the money heist. Surprisingly, actor Úrsula Corberó, who played Tokyo in the series, despised the red jumpsuits. “I was fed up with the red jumpsuit. I needed to have a nice outfit,” she said through a translator.

In agreeance, actor Jaime Lorente, who plays heist member Denver, said he never liked the attire. “I actually never liked it. I love it as a symbol, of course, but it’s not comfortable at all,” he shared.

Some cast members liked the red jumpsuits for a particular reason

While some cast members have strong opinions about the red jumpsuits, quite a few have a different outlook on the attire. For one, actor Esther Acebo wore the jumpsuit on two separate occasions and had a positive experience.

“Just like any other uniform you wear to work, the first time I wore it, I felt proud because I was coming from the other side. But when you get to the changing room and you’re tired and the jumpsuit’s wet or full of powder, because you have these stains and things like that – you get that horrible sensation, you don’t like it,” Acebo told Collider.

Acebo managed to keep a jumpsuit for herself and “cried” her eyes out after taking it home. “The last time I saw it was when I got it sent home, and I cried like a little girl,” she added.

The ‘Money Heist’ cast wore more than 600 red jumpsuits

The Money Heist cast members wear red jumpsuits during multiple scenes in the show. In all five seasons, the cast wore more than 600 red jumpsuits. According to The Indian Express, the show’s costume designer, Carloz Diez, said dressing the characters was a “huge challenge.”

“Making costumes for Money Heist is fantastic because each character is different. Dressing all the characters individually and as a group, with the iconic red jumpsuits they use in the heist, has been a huge challenge. That was an idea that came from the initial script by Álex Pina,” he explained.

Money Heist Season 5 Vol. 2 premieres on Dec. 3, 2021, on Netflix.
