Since the beginning of Manifest, the youngest Flight 828 passenger, Cal Stone, has contributed some of the most insightful tidbits in the story. He often interprets his Callings through sketches in a notebook. One looming mystery that Cal has yet to solve is from a drawing he created in Season 1 Episode 2. In that episode, the young artist drew a picture of his family with a shadow lurking in the background. That loose end had been largely ignored until the back end of Season 2, and if a statement from Jeff Rake, the creator of Manifest, is any indication, fans will not have to wait long to get some answers.

Cal’s mysterious shadow threat multiplied over time

In Cal’s original drawing, there was one smoky shape lurking behind his family, but in Season 2, he noticed that the rendering seemed to change, and three figures loomed over the Stone Family. It wasn’t long before Cal began to see the three shapes creeping into his bedroom, seemingly haunting him night after night.

Meanwhile in Season 2 Episode 10, Adrian had a run-in with the menacing shadows after a particularly heated debate with Ben. The ex-spiritual leader had tried to convince Ben that the Callings originate from an evil source that aims to bring about the apocalypse. He cited the Bible scripture, Matthew 24:24, which reads:

“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

If Adrian is correct, it might mean that the 828ers can find more answers about the Callings, the Death Date, and the shadows in the Good Book. As it stands, one cannot ignore the possible connection the shadows may have to a different scripture, Psalm 23:4, which reads in part, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.”

Could the “shadow of death” mentioned in the passage be a clue about the shadowy figures as well as the passengers’ Death Date?

Show creator responds on Twitter about ‘Manifest’ shadows

Manifest Season 2 Episode 11 revealed a connection that the shadows have to some new characters. In the episode, Michaela and Jared made a drug bust and nabbed three suspects. In the final scene, their shadows were shown to match up directly with the ones haunting Cal. That revelation set Twitter ablaze with questions and speculation about where the story might head.

One viewer noted, “But I don’t remember those three guys from the plane, so how are they tied in? Jace definitely knew something, by the things he was saying to her [Michaela] as she was getting the calling.”

Another wondered in a tweet, “Well that reveal was very unnerving. Is it connected?”

Some fans seemed to be at a loss for words with tweets like this one: “Wait, what?!”

Jeff Rake, the creator and executive producer of Manifest chimed in with a simple response, saying, “More on this next week.”

Rake’s tweet is good news for Manifest fans who are eager for more pieces of the puzzle.
