The Most-Worn Necklace in Cannes History Costs a Whopping $1.2 Million; See How Rihanna, Jane Fonda, and Other Stars Pull It Off
Exceptionally rare and oh so expensive… We’re not talking about us normies’ chances of going to the Cannes Film Festival. We’re describing the most-worn necklace in the prestigious event’s 78-year history. Chopard designed the pink and white beauty as part of the Swiss jeweler’s Red Carpet collection. Learn who’s worn it and how much it costs here:
Bella Thorne became the most recent star to don this massive piece when she walked the Cannes red carpet for the premiere of Motel Destino. The 2024 erotic thriller competed for several awards at the 77th annual festival. But Thorne may have stolen the show with her gorgeous look. The 26-year-old’s black Nicolas Jebran Couture gown featured an off-the-shoulder collared necklace to show off the necklace.
Chopard loaned the Rumble Through the Dark star one of their most recognizable pieces for the international event. Worth $1.2 million, the necklace boasts a 123.24-carat pear-cut rubellite and 65.24 carats of diamonds set in platinum. “Rubellites are the most valuable among all tourmaline gemstones,” explains Maxwell Stone of Steven Stone Jewellers.
The price tag may seem staggering. But, according to Stone, it’s “unsurprising given its extravagance and its engraving in Cannes history.” Before Thorne’s run with the necklace, two other celebs accessorized their black gowns with it.
On May 24, 2023, Karina of the K-pop girl group aespa wore the piece to the screening of the French historical romantic drama La Passion De Dodin Bouffant. The South Korean singer and rapper styled the necklace with a similar black floor-length gown, this time covered in layers of tulle. The collar, although more traditional than Thorne’s, certainly served to highlight the Chopard piece.
One day later, Georgina Rodríguez walked the red carpet at the amfAR Gala 2023. The Argentine-born Spanish social media influencer went the familiar route of a black dress and open, collared neckline. Although the cocktail-length number skewed a bit less formal, Rodríguez’s dress certainly served to highlight the Chopard piece.
Ten years earlier, Jane Fonda took the necklace in a different and arguably more fun direction. On May 19, 2013, the Grace and Frankie star wore the piece to the Inside Llewyn Davis premiere at Cannes. Fonda’s ruched hot pink dress gorgeously accented the 123.24-carat pear-cut rubellite draped on her décolletage.
Rihanna didn’t wear the Chopard necklace to Cannes, but we must mention her moment with the $1.2 million piece. On December 11, 2014, the Barbadian singer accessorized her satin Zac Posen gown with the necklace for the first annual Diamond Ball, benefitting the Clara Lionel Foundation. The luxurious rose dress beautifully completed the sparkling stones, framed by the structured off-the-shoulder neckline.
