Kerry Washington Teases That ‘The Fight’ Is About ‘Real-Life Avengers’
Hollywood heavy-hitter Kerry Washington popped up on Good Morning America to plug her newest feature, The Fight. And while it is a documentary, Washington teased that the film has a superhero vibe. Here’s why.
Kerry Washington served as a producer of ‘The Fight’
The Fight follows lawyers who work for the American Civil Liberties Union. “At a defining moment in American history, a scrappy team of heroic ACLU lawyers battles for abortion rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights and voting rights,” reads the synopsis for The Fight.
Washington earned a producing credit for the film, adding to a growing list of behind-the-scenes gigs. The actor has racked up producing credits for various projects in which she has also starred, including Scandal, Confirmation, American Son, and Little Fires Everywhere. But for The Fight, Washington reserves the spotlight for the ACLU lawyers.
Washington compared the lawyers of the ACLU to Marvel’s ‘Avengers’
On the promotion circuit for The Fight, Washington appeared alongside featured ACLU lawyer, Dale Ho, on GMA. During the interview, Washington described the ACLU team as ‘real-life Avengers.’
“These guys are so inspiring. You really look at the last four years, how they have been in the trenches fighting for civil rights and civil liberties for every single American with attacks on our civil liberties coming from this administration. And they really are fighting this fight,” explained Washington on GMA. “To me, these guys are like our real-life Avengers, you know.”
Here’s how Washington says the lawyers of ‘The Fight’ reflect superhero qualities
Fans of The Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole will note that the big-screen superheroes are extraordinary. From Norse gods to super-soldiers to weapons gurus, the Avengers are a formidable force.
It speaks volumes that Washington would compare the lawyers in The Fight to the icons of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What superpowers will the legal eagles unleash in The Fight? Washington held back those juicy details, but she did tease that the documentary reveals the heroes’ humanity. Washington explained:
They are real superheroes and to see that fight is so inspiring. But at the same time in the film, you see them flubbing up their presentations, and you see them hanging their kids upside-down because they’re on a Zoom call trying to get work done, which we all now identify with, in COVID. You see them not being able to find their phone chargers at the most important moment of a decision coming down. And those moments make these superheroes look very human.
And I think that’s one of the things that the filmmakers have done so beautifully, is that by doing that we’re all reminded that each of us has the potential to be a superhero in our own way. That these guys are human, that they’re vulnerable, that we each could as they do figure out how to make change in our little circle of the world. It’s so, so inspiring what they do, and my hope is that people walk away asking themselves, ‘how can I be a part of the fight for all of us?’
