‘Ms. Marvel’ Shares ‘Vibes’ with ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Stranger Things’
The all-new trailer for Ms. Marvel dropped in March 2022 — and for many Marvel fans, it’s a dream come true. The limited series premieres on the streaming platform on June 8, 2022, bringing to life a character that has before only appeared in the pages of comic books. With Disney keeping many of the show’s secrets under lock and key, fans speculate in earnest about what they could see in Ms. Marvel. And the YouTube comments offer some interesting comparisons.
The ‘Ms. Marvel’ trailer revealed some serious ’80s vibes
Disney released the Ms. Marvel trailer on March 15, 2022. But fans didn’t waste any time discussing the look and feel of the clips featured. As one fan wrote in the comment section on YouTube, “I love the initial aesthetic of this show. Is definitely eye catchy for younger audiences.” Another fan compared it to a Sony-Marvel project, writing, “This looks like a live action spider man into the spider verse vibes. I’m gonna love it.”
Several fans praised the use of The Weeknd’s song “Blinding Lights” in the trailer. “Just by hearing The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, this legit feels like a Stranger Things Series.” The wildly positive comments continued to praise the bright technicolor palate. Though the released footage didn’t contain spoilers, it’s clear that most fans are on the same page with their level of excitement to see this comic brought to life.
The comic series debuted in 2014
The character of Kamala Khan was first introduced to Marvel Comics readers in 2013. In 2014, she scored her own solo series. The character, who is the comic giant’s first Muslim superhero, has become beloved amongst fans of all ages. And this new Disney+ series gives the young character a chance to shine while offering up a coming-of-age story that has something for everyone.
As the YouTube fans noted, the first trailer gives off similar vibes as Stranger Things, a Netflix series featuring ’80s style and references alongside supernatural elements. Like Ms. Marvel, the show appeals to a broad audience, tapping into a nostalgia factor for the older crowd while sharing a coming-of-age story for the younger viewers.
Additionally, Ms. Marvel utilizes a hip, upbeat soundtrack along with thought bubbles and other cartoon elements, connecting it closely to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the 2018 critically-acclaimed animated film.
What is ‘Ms. Marvel’ about?
The Ms. Marvel Disney+ series tells the story of Kamala Khan, a high-school student who lives in New Jersey and daydreams of being a superhero — just like her idol, Captain Marvel. After Kamala finds a mystical bracelet, she develops powers that seem to be energy-based. Now, she grapples with the pressures of being superhuman and all the other stresses of high school and family.
Newcomer Iman Vellani plays Kamala Khan in the series. Currently, it’s not clear whether any big-name Marvel stars, like Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel herself, could make appearances in the series. But fans will learn more in the coming weeks. Ms. Marvel debuts on Disney+ on June 8, 2022.
