In Narcos: Mexico Season 3, Mexican drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes developed a steamy romance with Cuban singer Marta (Yessica Borroto Perryman). Although viewers got a glimpse into Fuente’s love life, actor José María Yazpik found it “weird” to film his love story on the Netflix series.

Who is Amado Carrillo Fuentes?

Amado Carrillo Fuentes was a Mexican drug lord that seized control of the Juárez Cartel after assassinating his boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo. Amado Carrillo became known as “El Señor de Los Cielos” (The Lord of the Skies) because of the large fleet of jets he used to transport drugs. Also, he laundered money in Colombia to finance this fleet. In Narcos: Mexico Season 3, Fuentes died in July 1997 after undergoing extensive plastic surgery to change his appearance. In Fuentes’ final days, the Mexican and U.S. authorities tracked Carrillo’s whereabouts with the intent to arrest him.

In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, actor José María Yazpik admitted that he found it strange to explore Amado Carrillo Fuentes’ love life on-screen. In the end, Yazpik felt the approach was “well-balanced” for the storyline.

“It felt weird,” he explained. “I mean the past seasons you also saw the main characters dive into their relationships etc. But it’s well known that Amado Carrillo was somewhat of a ladies’ man, especially when he was living here in Mexico City.”

Yazpik continued, “It’s weird, it feels weird because you don’t want an action-packed, socially demanding role to go into the melodramatic kind of state. But, I think it’s very well balanced. After the first reads of the [scripts], it just felt natural to do so.”

Yazpik said it was great to ‘dive’ into his character ‘more emotionally than physically’

Although actor José María Yazpik found the romance storyline uncanny, fans got to see a softer side to Amado Carrillo Fuentes. “It was great to dive into this character more emotionally than physically,” the actor explained.

Yazpik added, “It is more of an existential road that Amado took in this last season, which, for an actor, is a gift because you don’t only get to do the action scenes. And what’s on top, you also get to work with layering which is always better for us.”

Toward the end of the series, Marta walks into the house Amado gave her. Two wine glasses were positioned on the piano and a toy airplane Amado gave his late daughter. Narcos: Mexico fans speculated the scene hinted at Amado being alive and reuniting with Marta. In addition, the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death suggest Amado escaped the authorities. So, is Amado really dead? Based on his sudden death, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unsolved.
