Natasia Demetriou of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Is the Host of Netflix’s New Must-Watch Competition Show ‘The Big Flower Fight’
Comedian Natasia Demetriou has a new gig, and it’s a lot less bloody than her current one. The star of FX’s vampire comedy series What We Do in the Shadows will co-host the upcoming Netflix competition reality show The Big Flower Fight. It premieres May 18.
Natasia Demetriou and Vic Reeves host ‘The Big Flower Fight’
In The Big Flower Fight, 10 teams of florists, sculptors, and garden designers from around the world put their talents to the test by creating elaborate floral installations. After every task, they’ll be judged by luxury floral designer Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht (along with some guest judges, including Simon Lycett, James Wong, James Alexander-Sinclair, Sarah Eberle, and Sophie Walker). One unlucky team will be sent home.
The winners get the chance to display their creation at London’s famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Think of it like The Great British Baking Show, but with flowers instead of fondant.
Demetriou — who is best known to American audiences for her role as Nadja on What We Do in the Shadows — will co-host the series with British comedian Vic Reeves, who has appeared on shows such as I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
“Working with Vic Reeves in a beautiful English field surrounded by loads of chicken wire – it’s every person’s dream job,” Demetriou told Radio Times.
These aren’t your typical floral arrangements
The words “floral arrangement” might make you think of lackluster grocery story bouquets, but contestants on The Big Flower Fight are working on a whole other level. In the trailer, we get a glimpse of what these designers are able to do.
“Teams will create super-sized structures festooned with flowers and foliage,” Reeves says.
Their creations include a giant T. rex, insects, birds, and a koala. In each round, the most impressive design wins Best in Bloom, while “one team will be heading directly for the compost pile,” Reeves explains.
Contestants have some serious chops. Among those competing are winners of gold and silver medals at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. There are also artists, florists, and landscape architects. They’ve come to the U.K.’s scenic countryside from as far away as Brooklyn and Vancouver to compete for the big prize.
‘The Big Flower Fight’ has a conservationist theme
According to Variety, The Big Flower Fight isn’t just about creating stunning arrangements. The show also has a conservationist theme. Contestants are urged to use plants that will benefit the environment, not hurt it, such as pollinating species that are friendly to insects.
“My mission is to help flowers finally get the respect they deserve,” VanderYacht told Radio Times. “This isn’t your basic bunch of blooms. This is the real deal. So buckle up and get your shovel ready for some farm fresh floral fantasy realness!”
The Big Flower Fight premieres May 18 on Netflix.
