During a 2006 interview, de Pablo told CBS she joined NCIS with an open mind. She wanted to allow the role of Ziva David to unfold naturally. “I had no preconceived ideas of anything,” de Pablo said. “And I think that’s the best way to enter a project. Just sort of go in there and know you’re going to make the best of it. And it’s going to be a new experience. If you want it to be, it could be a fantastic experience. And know that it’s going to be challenging, incredibly challenging.”

NCIS Director Dennis Smith told CBS de Pablo was confident from the moment she first stepped onto the set. He said although she hadn’t been part of the cast long, she didn’t miss a beat, and she wasn’t intimidated by Weatherly when she first started working with him. “Cote is so different and was so different from the first moment she arrived, from Sasha Alexander, the Kate Todd character,” Smith said. “There wasn’t too much comparing them. She was so different, and also, she was unflappable. She came on board and wasn’t intimidated by any of Michael Weatherly’s jokes or his ad libs. He just played with her and Cote won’t allow herself to be played with.”
Michael Weatherly’s first on-screen kiss with Cote de Pablo
Weatherly and de Pablo shared their first on-screen kiss during season 3, episode 8, titled “Under Covers.” He says she surprised him during their first kiss. “Cote de Pablo, in “Under Covers,” turned to me the first day of shooting, and she said, ‘Michael, this is so strange because I have never kissed anyone on camera before,’” said Weatherly in his CBS interview. “So, I thought I’d get this timid, little baby squirrel peck. She almost ate my face in the first take. It was like in Alien, when the thing gets on the head. So, we had to back her off that.”
Cote de Pablo wasn’t fond of Michael Weatherly when they first met
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, de Pablo described her audition with Weatherly as “interesting.” However, it wasn’t in a good way. The actress says she thought Weatherly was trying to sabotage her audition and she didn’t like him:
I think we had a really interesting audition. I think it totally started there. This audition, I walked in. There was another girl auditioning also. Two people were testing for the part. And she went in first and I went in second. And she was kind of flirting with you and I wasn’t.
Halfway through the audition, you leaned over and you grabbed by hand. You went off book completely, which you often do. And I did not. It was just your way of working, which is interesting. You grabbed my hand and you said, ‘You’re so pretty, you remind me of Salma Hayek.’ And I thought, ‘This guy is totally flirting with me, sabotaging my audition.’ And then I thought, ‘Oh, God.’ End of audition, I totally didn’t like you.
