The stakes are high when NCIS returns for its 22nd season. In “Empty Nest,” the team searches for a missing undercover agent in the midst of an active hostage situation.

In one photo from the episode, Knight (Katrina Law) – who took a new job on the West Coast at the end of season 21 – has donned full combat gear. In “Empty Nest,” she “encounters a very serious problem involving her skills as a hostage negotiator,” executive producer Stephen D. Binder told TV Insider

In another photo, McGee (Sean Murray) confers with NCIS director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) and other agents.

There’s a mole inside NCIS this season

The dramatic premiere kicks off what’s sure to be another action-packed season of NCIS. A season 22 trailer (via YouTube) teases a mole inside the organization, which could put everyone at risk.

“Too many secrets, dishonesty. We’ve got to stop that mole without starting a war,” Agent Parker (Gary Cole) says.

Meanwhile, Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) is asked to make an impossible choice.

“If you want me to kill one of my own, I need a good reason,” he says.

Binder told TV Insider that Torres is very much a lone wolf this season as he digs deep into an undercover assignment.

“He goes undercover with some bad people and it doesn’t work out well,” he explained. “He gets into a lot of trouble. He’s on this road of undercover loner, not really having relationships. Where does that road lead?”

“Empty Nest” will air Monday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. It will also stream live and on-demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers and on-demand the next day for Paramount+ Essential subscribers.

The new episode kicks off a full night of NCIS on CBS. The season 22 premiere will be immediately followed by the two-hour series premiere of prequel NCIS: Origins. (International spinoff series NCIS: Sydney will return mid-season and take over Blue Bloods’ Friday, 8 p.m. timeslot.)

In the first episode of NCIS: Origins, fans will meet the newly minted special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell).
