Is ‘Never Have I Ever’ Renewed or Canceled on Netflix? (UPDATED)
As of this write-up, Netflix has yet to renew or cancel Never Have I Ever for season 2. But even so, a second season isn’t exactly out of the question. A few days after the show’s release, Kaling revealed Never Have I Ever earned the no. 1 spot on Netflix in multiple countries.
“I’m truly in shock. I can’t believe that our show about a complicated little Indian family has been seen by this many people,” Kaling wrote on May 1. “@loulielang, the entire cast and crew are so grateful to you for making us #1 around the world on @netflix. We love you guys! Thank you!!”
Meanwhile, when speaking with Entertainment Tonight, co-creator Lang Fisher revealed she is “hopeful” about Never Have I Ever Season 2.
“It’s like you don’t want to jinx anything but I feel optimistic,” Fisher said. “I’d love to keep telling the story and come back and see where these characters are. It was a really fun show to work on and to write. I’m optimistic but nothing’s a guarantee.”
Update: On July 1, Netflix announced Never Have I Ever will return for season 2.
“We are so excited for a second season of #NeverHaveIEver,” Kaling wrote on Instagram after the announcement. “It’s all because you guys turned up to watch it and told your friends – it’s that simple! Thank you so much. And THANK YOU to our partners at @Netflix!”
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan shares her hopes for ‘Never Have I Ever’ Season 2
In an interview with Stylecaster from April 2020, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan — who plays Devi Vishwakumar — opened up about the possibility of Never Have I Ever Season 2. The actor explained the decision is all in Fischer’s hands. However, she hopes Netflix will renew the series.
‘I hope there’s a season 2,” Ramakrishnan said. “I’m not even upset about our premiere being canceled or any kind of conventional press junket. I just want a season 2 to keep the story moving forward.”
The 18-year-old then shared what she wants to see if Never Have I Ever Season 2 gets the green light.
“I want to see Devi start loving and appreciating herself because I think a lot of people are missing that from their lives, whether you’re a kid or an adult,” Ramakrishnan said. ‘People need to learn that you need to love yourself first.”
Ramakrishnan also delved into her hopes for Devi’s future when speaking with Variety. And ultimately, it boils down to embracing herself and those closest to her as well as facing her own grief. Ramakrishnan said:
Three main things — understanding that she needs to be more appreciative of her family and her friends because her friends do a lot for her. Her friends really are her day ones. And also understanding where her mother’s coming from … Then also the idea of approaching that grief — confronting it, having that battle, even though it’s something uncomfortable to think about, [but] actually just running toward it and facing it, dealing with it head-on.”
And then number three, of course, embracing her culture because that is so important in a world where identity is everything. It’s how you portray yourself. It’s how you show yourself to the world and how everybody will view you, but also how you accept yourself. And I think if Devi does those magic three, she might be a little bit more at peace with herself.
With Fisher and Vishwakumar on board, Never Have I Ever Season 2 seems promising. But of course, fans will just have to wait and see.
