In 2018, Fox’s New Girl marked the end of an era. After seven seasons, the TV show treated fans to a time jump. Some felt slighted with the rushed eight episode-season, saying the series finale didn’t do the characters justice. The cast of New Girl may have felt the same way, adding there’s one key piece of a series wrap that they didn’t get to experience.

With reruns readily available on just about any device, New Girl‘s fan base continues growing long after the 2018 series finale. After a successful run, the sitcom’s end is something cast, crew, and fans still aren’t ready to accept.

The show concluded with a married Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and CeCe (Hannah Simone), who’d had a child. Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) were also married with a child, giving the dedicated NG fans what’s been teased all along.

Regardless of what went down throughout those eight episodes in season 7, Johnson says the cast missed out on a crucial part of the finale experience.

When a beloved series wraps, the cast typically gets “the treatment.” This includes everything from exit interviews to late-night circuit appearances, to reunion specials, and everything in between.

During an interview with Slate’s Thirst Aid Kit podcast, Johnson said Fox canceled New Girl because viewership slipped. To make matters worse, the eight episodes which pushed the storyline forward didn’t satisfy those still hanging on.

“When we were going away, Fox was being pretty cool and saying like, ‘We don’t want to cancel you, but nobody’s watching,” Johnson said.

He went on to explain that the cast wasn’t invited to do the interview rounds at the conclusion of the series and no one asked them to be on any show to talk about the show’s end.

“So now that there’s people following New Girl, I’m like, it’s not like you’re 10 years too late, you’re 18 months,” he said. “It’s a little bittersweet. We were just working!”

Without the usual celebratory interviews, is New Girl really even over? Johnsons said he and Deschanel initially emailed the top people at Fox and 20th Century TV, “asking for more, for the few OG fans who stayed with us.”

“You can’t end the way season six ended where it was rushed. I was like, ‘Give [creator] Liz Meriwether the time to finish this right!'” he argued.

That said, Johnson hinted at a possible New Girl reunion in the works to make all of that up to their fans.

“Hannah Simone and I were texting two nights ago. Zooey and I still text,” he said. “All the guys and I are on a text chain. Everybody’s still linked up, so I would be surprised if there’s not some sort of a thing at some point where everybody comes back.”

In the meantime, Johnsons voices a basketball coach in the adult animated comedy, Hoops, on Netflix. New Girl costars, Simone, Greenfield, and Damon Wayans also appear.

Still, the mere thought of Nick, Jess, and the gang joining forces in some New Girl iteration has fans buzzing.

“I really miss you!! I need you together again! Please, one more season !!!!” one fan commented on the show’ Instagram page.

“No! You’re not allowed to keep this page up unless the show is coming back. Because I rewatch it way to much,” another added.

“The world needs more New Girl please,” another said.

Clearly 2020 has been groundbreaking in strange ways and the only cure is more New Girl.
