New ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Dinosaur is like Batman’s The Joker, According to Filmmaker
After the Jurassic Park series acquainted audiences with T-Rexes and Velociraptors, Jurassic World introduced deadlier versions of the prehistoric predators. But the franchise’s monsters grow smarter and far more dangerous. And according to writer/director Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World Dominion will feature a dinosaur inspired by the famous Batman villain, The Joker.
The new ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ dinosaur is called the ‘Giga’
The Jurassic World series is set in the same world as the ’90s movies. But its genetically modified dinosaur crossbreeds are far more dangerous than their predecessors.
The first movie featured the extraordinarily massive whale-like Mosasaur, along with the Indominus Rex — a Tyrannosaurus Rex hybrid that was enhanced using the DNA of several different theropods. Fallen Kingdom took things a step further with the Indoraptor — a Velociraptor and Indominus Rex hybrid.
The third film, Jurassic World Dominion, features Giganotosaurus, or “Giga,” a real therapod that lived in the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Argentina. And as Trevorrow revealed, his version of the predator has the vibe of a sinister Batman villain.
“I wanted something that felt like the Joker,” the filmmaker told Empire. “It just wants to watch the world burn.”
Colin Trevorrow saved ‘Giga’ for ‘Jurassic World Dominion’
Trevorrow worked on both Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. And while he had Giga in mind for quite some time, the filmmaker wanted to wait for the third film to introduce it.
“We wanted to keep certain species in the tank to really hold back for scientists and fans who follow this stuff,” Trevorrow told Slash Film. “The Giganotosaurus — I knew that that’s the largest carnivore known to humankind and I really wanted to make sure that we held her back to make sure that we had a villain for the third movie.”
Along with Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern, good old T-Rex is also making a comeback in Jurassic World Dominion. And according to Trevorrow, the fan-favorite dinosaur is getting a worthy adversary in Giga.
“We are introducing a major villain and a rivalry in a lot of ways,” he teased. “If you were brutally murdered 65 million years ago, you probably pretty mad about it.”
‘Jurassic World Dominion’ doesn’t feature hybrids
Unlike the first two films, Jurassic World Dominion doesn’t feature any hybrid dinosaurs. And that’s mostly because Trevorrow didn’t want to revisit the same concepts over again.
“I just felt like we’d done it,” he told Screen Rant. We had hybrids in the first two movies and we have them in Camp Cretaceous. I don’t know, it didn’t feel tonally right with this movie. This movie is much more of a science thriller than the others.”
The director acknowledged the appeal of hybrids like Indominus Rex. But he felt it would be far more exciting to focus on dinosaurs that really existed.
“That’s what made me fall in love with this franchise in the first place,” Trevorrow explained. “And I love there’s a generation that’s super into the hybrids — and I love that we got to do them. But real dinosaurs are awesome; they don’t need to be hybrids to be awesome.”
The Jurassic World Dominion release date is June 10, 2022.
