New fans have been sounding off about the series ever since it was added to the streaming service provider’s catalog. New fans have debated each boyfriend and friendship tiff. They are also commenting on the fashion. Samantha Jones’ Hermès Birkin bag featured in the show’s fourth season has everyone talking. Fans are amazed at how cheap a Birkin bag was in the early 2000s.
Samantha Jones’ Birkin bag purchase is surprising new fans
In the season 4 episode, “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda,” Samantha Jones becomes obsessed with purchasing a Hermès Birkin bag. She’s willing to pay the price, but a long waitlist forces her to find an alternative way of securing the purse. She cuts the waitlist by telling a rep for Hermès that the purse is intended for her client, Lucy Lui. The plan backfires when Lui shows up with the bag and informs Samantha that a rep for the company has already called about her less-than-professional language.
Samantha was willing to shell out $4,000 to get her hand on the Birkin bag of her dreams, despite Carrie insisting it wasn’t her “style.” While $4,000 is still a large sum for a purse, fans new to the series were not amazed by the expense. They were shocked by just how cheap the purse was in the early 2000s.
The 35cm red Birkin sold for $4,000 in the early 2000s but is worth much more now. The infamous bag now retails for over $12,000. Depending on the materials used and the exclusivity of the design, some Birkin’s can fetch over six figures. Fans never learn whether Samantha got the bag back from Lucy Lui or if she had to consider the $4,000 a business loss.
Samantha Jones’ Birkin bag wasn’t the only time the designer was mentioned in the show
Samantha’s Birkin obsession took centerstage and is certainly the series’s most memorable mention of the designer handbag. Still, it was not the only time something resembling a Birkin was included in the series, though. Carrie carried what looked like a Hermès Birkin bag in season 5. Carrie’s bag was never mentioned, and little attention was drawn to it. That was likely on purpose. The bag’s entire objective was to hide Sarah Jessica Parker’s pregnancy. The purse was not the real deal. Parker once revealed that the Birkin her character carried was a replica.
A Birkin bag also appears in And Just Like That… season 2. Seema Patel is seen carrying the coveted handbag before she is mugged outside of her townhouse. The thief made off with her bag. The purse was later recovered. It’s unclear if the bag Seema was carrying was the real deal or a knockoff, but it is likely a real Birkin, as much of the episode’s storyline revolves around the purse.
