New’ Star Wars’ Movie Slotted for 2022 Will Bring New Force Abilities and a Middle-Aged Yoda
With the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes many questions about what is next for the galaxy far far away. The announcement about the 2022 movie will come straight from Lucasfilm in late January 2020. Until then, let’s take a look at the few leaks that are out there, stating that there will be new force abilities and a middle-aged Yoda.
The next move for the ‘Star Wars’ Universe will make it very similar to the Marvel Studios approach
The future of Star Wars involves a massive publishing project announced at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, called Project Luminous. This initiative brings together Disney, Lucasfilm, Del Rey, IDW Publishing, and Marvel for interconnecting novels, stories, and comics, according to two sources: Hungarian fansite Ziro and Making Star Wars.
“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things… Until… Project Luminous” reads the tagline for the new project.
Further leaks indicate that Project Luminous is not just Star Wars books. It is also a new path for Star Wars movies, which is more similar to the Marvel Studios approach.
“As far as we know, these stories would be separate, but also connected, similar to the MCU,” explained informants on the Hungarian fansite, Ziro. “The more one would see, the more it could be enjoyed, with the different plots culminating in the style of the Avengers movies.”
The fansites corroborate one another, and both indicate that Disney believes the current trilogy format has flaws. Therefore, they are developing this new path.
The 2022 ‘Star Wars’ movie explores new Jedi powers and a 500-year-old Yoda
These stories are going to take place about 400 years before the events in the Skywalker Saga, in the High Republic. The Game of Thrones creators, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, originally began work on this era, until they left Lucasfilm.
One of the storylines follows a group of Jedi exploring the galaxy. They travel to Unknown regions where the Sith planet of Exegol was found in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This leading group of Jedi is said to have varying strengths and powers, similar to superheroes, according to Ziro.
The Jedi will get involved in various adventures and conflicts where they will come across three different types of enemies. Sith gods will be the darkest of these ancient evils.
The characters won’t all be new. We will get one fan-favorite returning to the story—the one and only, Yoda. It’s not a creature of the same species as Yoda, like The Mandalorian‘s Baby Yoda. This character will be our beloved Yoda when he is about 500 years old.
Why is ‘Star Wars’ abandoning the trilogy format?
The leaks coming out indicate that the storylines will appear in either movies, comics, or books. Project Luminous will connect everything, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There will be multiple individual stories coming out, along with team-up plot-lines similar to Avengers. This format does mean that Lucasfilm is ending the trilogy format fans are accustomed to.
“I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told The Los Angeles Times. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”
In addition to the 2022 movie, various books, and comics, Star Wars will also be releasing a video game set in the High Republic era. More information will follow when Lucasfilm makes its announcement in late January 2020.
