The New ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Trailer Promises Lots of Nick
In The Handmaid’s Tale, Max Minghella appears as Nick Blaine, a Commander in Gilead and June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) love interest. To fans’ dismay, Minghella did not appear as Nick in much of the third season. However, a new trailer for Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale shows Nick will have a prominent role.
Nick’s scenes were cut in the third season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
In the first two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick was featured in a majority of the episodes and his relationship with June grew. This changed in the third season when Nick was promoted to the role of a Commander.
At the beginning of the third season, Nick finds out he will be deployed to Chicago, a battleground on the show, and he is not seen again after the sixth episode of the season.
In a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, showrunner Bruce Miller revealed this was originally not the plan for Nick.
“We just don’t have the real estate in the show,” he said. “We would love to delve into more stories. We had all sorts of other stuff with Nick… Max is a wonderful actor. He has scenes that we filmed that we weren’t able to use, and it’s heartbreaking.”
With Nick’s scenes being cut, Miller explained the show was able to make this a creative choice for June’s character.
“When Nick’s gone, he’s truly gone for June, because it’s not like she can look on the Internet or call,” he said. “It’s like he was plucked off the face of the earth, and in the novel that was such a strong feeling, that he kind of disappeared.”
A new ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ trailer features Nick
Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere on April 28 on Hulu. Leading up to the new season, Hulu has released multiple teasers and trailers.
Based on the teasers, fans of the show already knew Nick would appear in the fourth season. However, a new trailer that was released on March 30 hints the character will have a prominent role.
At the start of the trailer, Nick tells two Marthas, “I’m looking for June Osborne.”
A Martha replies that Nick is “better off without her,” and this comment appears to upset Nick.
Nick and June are seen reuniting on a bridge and they hold each other in a romantic embrace. The next few scenes show June on her own taking part in the rebellion against Gilead.
In a voiceover to Nick, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) tells Nick, “You can’t save her. You understand that right?”
Lawrence is then seen sitting next to Nick and he says, “Some women don’t want to be saved… Perhaps she’s fulfilled her purpose and it’s time to move on.”
Nick tears up at this and says, “I can’t.”
Nick and June’s romantic relationship is still going strong
The new trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale puts an emphasis on freedom, and several clues hint that June possibly escapes Gilead and reunites with her husband, Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle). Despite the possible reunion between Luke and June, it seems June and Nick will continue their relationship in some capacity.
Toward the end of the trailer, Nick tells June, “Freedom agrees with you,” hinting that they reunite after June escapes. After Nick says this, the two embrace, showing that they still have an intimate connection.
