Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey Admit Taking a Break to Date Other People Helped Their Relationship
Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey are a celebrity couple who also host Netflix’s hit dating show Love Is Blind. Recently, the pair also signed on to host The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, another dating show on the streaming service.
The Lacheys seem to have relationships figured out. Surprisingly, one thing that helped their romance was taking a break and dating other people.
Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey have been together for 15 years
According to Us Weekly, Nick and Vanessa first met in the early 2000s. She was a host on TRL and he, as a singer, would appear on various episodes of the show.
After Nick ended his marriage to Jessica Simpson, he released the song “What’s Left of Me,” and Vanessa appeared in the music video. Things got romantic between Nick and Vanessa. They confirmed their relationship in late 2006.
In 2009, Nick and Vanessa broke up for a few months. At the time, Nick shared with Us Weekly, “We’re trying to figure things out. I don’t pretend to know what the future holds, but everything’s good. Vanessa’s a good girl, and I care about her a lot.”
After they got back together, the couple got engaged in 2010 and married in 2011. They now have three children: Camden (born 2012), Brooklyn (born 2015), and Phoenix (born 2016).

Nick and Vanessa’s new Netflix show, The Ultimatum, will follow several couples as they date other people to see what they really want from a relationship. The Lacheys themselves also had a similar experience during their brief break.
“We actually—if I’m being completely candid and transparent—we took a break,” Vanessa said during a preview for the show. “We both saw one other person. And we realized that, if we got out of our own way, we could be amazing together.”
She continued, “But it took seeing somebody else and me realizing [that] I don’t mind the things that I thought bugged me or were holding me back. I don’t mind that at all. Like, the bigger picture is how I feel about this person, and their values of wanting to be with me, and knowing everything about me.”
“I think we got perspective,” Nick added.
How do Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey make their marriage work?
Nick and Vanessa seem to be a symbol of a successful married couple in an industry where relationships are not known to last long.
In an interview with Today in 2018, Nick shared that one way they make their marriage work is to have a mindset of being “in it for the long haul.” He shared, “We have to have the mentality that, no matter what it is, we’re going to get through it. We’re going to work through it together.”
The couple also acknowledged that relationships take some work to maintain. Vanessa revealed they saw a therapist before getting married to help them communicate better.
Additionally, making time for one another is also important. In 2020, Vanessa shared on The Bellas Podcast that another key ingredient in their marriage is “shower sex”.
“I’m in the shower and I’m like, ‘I have a full day. You have a full day. It’s either now or never,’” she explained. “The kids are at school. It happens and then later that night, if you get like the cherry on top, great. But if not, we already did shower sex.”
