Nicki Minaj Extends an Olive Branch to Drake After Fallout
Nicki Minaj’s relationship with Drake has changed so much over the years. Once friends and collaborators, the two had a falling out in the late 2010s due to Drake’s relationship with Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend Meek Mill. But now, it looks like things could be turning around, as Nicki Minaj has extended an olive branch to her “Moment 4 Life” collaborator.
A detailed history of Nicki Minaj’s relationship with Drake
Nicki Minaj and Drake developed a relationship while signed to the rap label Young Money Entertainment. They went on to gain fame around the same time in the late 2000s and worked together on songs such as “Bed Rock,” “Only,” and “Make Me Proud.”
Throughout the years, they often faced rumors that they were secretly romantically involved. However, both of them described their relationship as more sibling-like, with Nicki Minaj saying in 2014 that Drake was like her “brother” (via MTV News).
And just like siblings, the two were known for getting into petty fights and arguments, including in 2013 when they allegedly clashed after Drake failed to include Nicki Minaj on his third studio album, Nothing Was the Same (via Capital Xtra). But regardless of what had happened between them, they seemed to always bounce back better and stronger.
One of Nicki Minaj and Drake’s biggest rifts came in 2015
Their relationship suffered a huge blow in 2015 when Drake began feuding with Nicki Minaj’s then-boyfriend Meek Mill. Because she cared for both of them, Nicki Minaj told The New York Times that she’d wanted to stay out of the drama. However, she was roped into it when Drake started using her stature and fame in raps to diss Meek Mill.
Though they eventually reconciled following her split from Meek Mill, that ceasefire appeared to end in 2018 when Drake became friends with her ex, who had been shading Nicki Minaj ever since their breakup.
Nicki Minaj seemed to hint at the fallout in her 2019 song “ Barbie Going Bad” — a remix to Drake and Meek Mill’s “Going Bad” — in which she accuses an unnamed person and her “brother” of trying to “end” her.
Amid rumors of their fallout, Drake confessed to Rap Radar in December 2019 that their relationship had changed “a lot” following the Meek Mill situation. “Probably forever,” he shared.
However, it seems like things are turning around for Nicki Minaj and Drake
Nicki Minaj showed interest in patching up things with Drake in her feature on Sada Baby’s “Whole Lotta Choppas Remix.” Released on Oct. 16, it includes a line where Nicki Minaj expresses hope that her newborn son will one day be able to play with Drake’s son, Adonis.
“This n*gga makin’ me feel erotic/Uh, he a freak like Giannis/To be honest, I hope one day we do a play-date with Adonis,” raps the new mom, who welcomed her first child with husband Kenneth Petty on Sept. 30.
As the lyrics spread around the Internet, Drake took to his Instagram Story and posted a screenshot of the song’s artwork along with the caption, “Play dates soon come.”
It’s the latest update at the time of this writing. But we’re glad to see that these two are moving in a positive direction!
