Nicola Coughlan is best known for playing Penelope Featherington/Lady Whistledown on the Netflix hit show Bridgerton. The role allowed her to gain international fame, and she was even invited to the 2022 Met Gala. Coughlan recently opened up about her experience, and she revealed that she slept in her Met Gala dress.

Nicola Coughlan attended the Met Gala for the first time

In May 2022, Coughlan attended her first Met Gala, where she dressed according to the “gilded glamour” theme. The Irish actor wore a pink-and-black ensemble created by designer Richard Quinn.

“The pieces feel amazing to wear, even when I put on the first toile it was beautifully cut. Richard and his team are so impressive,” Coughlan told Vogue.

Quinn, meanwhile, noted that Coughlan is an embodiment of the theme “gilded glamour” thanks to her role on Bridgerton.

“We’re so thrilled to be working with Nicola,” Quinn said. “She’s the epitome of gilded glamour, especially since recently starring as the iconic Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton. We wanted to embody the theme through shape and textile without being too literal.”

Met Gala outfits tend to be very elaborate and — at times — even uncomfortable to wear. However, Coughlan revealed she did not take her dress off after the event.

“I didn’t get home until 5 in the morning and I couldn’t get the dress off so I had to sleep in the dress,” she told Extra.

It should be noted that, based on photos on social media, Coughlan was not wearing her full outfit after the Met Gala. At the afterparties, the actor appeared to have taken off her cape and pink outer layer.

Coughlan was not the only Bridgerton star to attend the Met Gala this year. Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page, and Simone Ashley all made their Met Gala debuts alongside Coughlan.

Dynevor shared with Harper’s Bazaar that her sheer black outfit was put together by a “brilliant team.” She explained, “I’m lucky to be working with such a brilliant team that understands me and my style, but especially for events like this, they are always finding looks that are authentic to my aesthetic while still pushing me to be a bit daring.”

Meanwhile, Ashley’s outfit was inspired by her Bridgerton character, Kate Sharma, and designed by Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott.

“I’ve often thought about her first scene in Bridgerton, and the mystery of who the woman with the big hooded cape galloping through the woods is,” Scott told Vogue UK. “As she unbuttons it, you see this gold embroidered bustier top and a black high-waisted bias-cut skirt. It’s completely Simone: it’s chic, it’s regal, and it’s got this kind of silhouette that you don’t find on the red carpet that often.”
