Prince Harry and Meghan Markle garnered a lot of headlines when they visited Nigeria recently as part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. While what’s being dubbed as the Sussexes’ “unofficial tour” was deemed a success by some, many locals voiced their displeasure about the visit.

Meghan’s outfit choices each day of the trip also received a lot of attention as some opined that her attire was skimpy and risque.

Here’s more on what the duchess wore and the brutal seven words First Lady Oluremi Tinubu had about “nakedness” in Nigerian culture.

Two weeks after Meghan and Harry’s visit to the African nation, Oluremi Tinubu spoke at an event to mark President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office. In her speech, she talked about “saving” young Nigerian girls who try to “mimic” the “nakedness” they see from “American film stars.”

Tinubu hit out with seven words saying: “We don’t accept nakedness in our culture.”

She then told the crowd in attendance: “[Nakedness] is not beautiful. It’s not beautiful at all. They’re all beautiful girls, but they should be confident in who they are. They do not want to mimic and try to emulate film stars from America. They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are. Don’t lose who you are.”

The video has been shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) with the caption: “When the First Lady of Nigeria puts your name, nakedness, and ignorance about your identity in the same sentence … Ouch!!!”

Several commenters on X pointed out that Meghan showed a lot more skin than any of the women she met in Nigeria with her outfit choices.

Some of the duchess’s looks included a backless halter peach-colored maxi dress by Heidi Merrick she wore to a stop at the Lightway Academy in the capital city of Abuja where they met with schoolchildren.

For an appearance at a charity volleyball match with her husband Meghan donned a silk, midi-length zebra-print outfit by Johanna Ortiz. The dress featured a high thigh slit in the front, a structured bodice with a sweetheart-style neckline, and a diamond-shaped hole right below the bralet-style top.

The same day as the charity match, the former Suits star changed into a white linen strapless gown for the evening reception at the defense headquarters.
