Noel Gallagher Said The 1975 Was ‘S***’ and Needed to Break Up After Matty Healy Called Oasis ‘the Coolest Band in the World’
Noel Gallagher left Oasis in 2009, much to the disappointment of The 1975’s Matty Healy. In 2023, Healy spoke about his love of the band and his hope that the Gallagher brothers could resolve their feud to reunite. Noel did not respond well to Healy’s suggestion.
Matty Healy wanted Noel and Liam Gallagher to put Oasis back together
In 2023, Healy gave a “public service announcement” about Oasis on Q With Tom Power (per People).
“What are Oasis doing?” Healy asked. “Can you imagine being in potentially – right now, still – the coolest band in the world, and not doing it because you’re in a mard [petulant mood in UK slang] with your brother?”
He said they needed to stop acting immaturely.
“Stop marding,” Healy said. “They’re like men of the people. And they’re sat around in, like, Little Venice and Highgate, crying over an argument with their brother. Grow up. Headline Glastonbury! Have a good time. Have a laugh.”
Healy insisted there was nobody in the world who would rather see one of their solo shows than an Oasis concert.
“Do me a favor: Get back together, stop messing around,” he concluded. “That’s my public service announcement for today.”
Noel Gallagher lashed out at Matty Healy
Several months later, a journalist for Spin asked Noel if he’d heard what Healy said about Oasis.
“Oh, that f***ing slack-jawed f***wit,” Noel responded. “What did he say?”
“Among other things, he said, ‘Can you imagine being in potentially – right now, still – the coolest band in the world, and not doing it because you’re in a mard with your brother?’” the journalist responded.
Noel snapped that Healy likely would have no idea what this was like because he wasn’t in a good band.
“He would never be able to imagine it,” Noel said. “He needs to go over how s*** his band is and split up.”
Healy eventually responded to Noel’s harsh words.
“I love Noel Gallagher. We asked Liam to open up and he said he would have done it but he was busy. But I love Noel Gallagher, give it up for Noel Gallagher. He’s just getting on,” Healy said. “The difference between me and Noel is that I do a series of interviews to promote an album, whereas he does an album to promote a series of interviews. But we love you Noel, get Oasis back together!”
Liam Gallagher also wanted a reunion with his brother
Just one year after Healy’s comments, Oasis announced they would embark on a reunion tour in 2025. Liam Gallagher said he would have done this several years ago if Noel had been open to it.
“The most important thing is about me and him being brothers. I’ve got another brother who he doesn’t speak to. It would be nice if all three of us would be together,” he told the Associated Press. “Obviously, our mum is still alive, so she gets upset about it. He thinks I’m desperate to get the band back together for money. But I didn’t join the band to make money. I joined the band to have fun and to see the world.”
