‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ and More Christmas Movies Coming To Disney+ in December 2020
Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, many are ready to get into the Christmas spirit. With many theaters closed worldwide due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, families are looking to the selection of holiday films available on streaming services. Discover some of the new (and old) options on Disney+ this season.
‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’
One of Disney’s previous theatrical holiday releases, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, was released on November 2, 2018. The film’s title and story come from the classic tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was adapted into the ballet The Nutcracker, often put on during the Christmas season.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms stars Mackenzie Foy as Clara, the young girl at the center of the story. On Christmas Eve, she enters a fantastical, where she meets characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley), Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), and many more. The film arrives on Disney+ on Friday, December 4.
‘Godmothered’
There are also plenty of new offerings for the 2020 holiday season. Godmothered stars Jillian Bell (Workaholics, Brittany Runs a Marathon) as Eleanor. Eleanor is an eager young woman in training to become a fairy godmother. She leaves the Motherland to help a girl named Mackenzie.
The problem? Mackenzie is now an adult (played by Isla Fisher). To prove the necessity of fairy godmothers and magic, Eleanor tries to turn Mackenzie’s life around — but the two women end up helping one another. Godmothered also premieres on Disney+ on Friday, December 4.
‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special‘
When Disney+ launched in 2019, one of its first original offerings was High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The scripted show portrays a group of students who perform the musical version of the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical from the ’00s.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was well-received and earned a 12-episode second season on the streaming service. While they haven’t been able to film it yet due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a holiday special, in which the cast sings seasonal tunes will premiere on Friday, December 11.
What other Christmas movies are on Disney+?
There aren’t too many new offerings coming to Disney+ as may be expected during the holiday season. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other options. Classic live-action films like Home Alone, The Santa Clause, Miracle on 34th Street, and many others are available to watch.
There are several animated films and specials featuring favorite Disney staples like Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, and the Frozen characters. And if you’re looking for something a bit newer, the 2019 Christmas movie Noelle (starring Anna Kendrick) and this years’ The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special are also available now for streaming.
