Olivia Rodrigo Dropped and Broke 1 of Her Grammy Awards, Just Like Her Idol Taylor Swift Once Did
Grammy-winning singer and actor Olivia Rodrigo took home three awards at the 2022 Grammy ceremony in Las Vegas. Like countless artists before her, including her idol Taylor Swift, Rodrigo posed for pictures carrying multiple golden gramophones. And like Taylor Swift before her, Rodrigo dropped one of them, breaking the trophy in two.
Olivia Rodrigo won 3 Grammy Awards — and broke 1 of them
At the 2022 Grammy Awards, Olivia Rodrigo was one of the most-nominated artists of the night. In total, she won three of the seven categories that she was nominated in: Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best New Artist.
While being photographed holding her three awards, Rodrigo dropped one on to the red carpet. The trophy broke into two pieces as Rodrigo gasped in shock; the photographers captured the moment while also expressing shock.
“That’s alright!” one photographer told Rodrigo in video captured by Variety. “We’ll just put it on your bill.” Another onlooker joked, “Now you have two Grammys.” Someone helped Rodrigo quickly reassmble the trophy before the end of her brief photo session.
Taylor Swift dropped and broke her Album of the Year Grammy in 2010
Olivia Rodrigo has looked up to Taylor Swift for years, and now they have something in common: they’ve both dropped and busted one of their Grammy Awards shortly after winning them.
In 2010, Taylor Swift was at the outbreak of her career, taking home her first four Grammy Awards at the 2010 ceremony. She won Album of the Year and Best Country Album for Fearless and Best Country Female Vocal Performance and Best Country Song for “White Horse.” After wining her awards, Swift entered the press room to pose for pictures. But while she was posing, one of the golden gramophones slipped out of her arms and fell to the ground. Someone standing by reassured her, “We’ve got more, don’t worry!”
The awards that artists receive on the night of the Grammys aren’t even the ones that they’ll ultimately choose to display in their homes: the Recording Academy sends the winners engraved trophies after the ceremony.
She sampled Swift on her Grammy-winning album ‘Sour’
Swift has a writing credit on Rodrigo’s album Sour, though Swift herself wasn’t nominated at the 2022 Grammys for her role in the project.
Rodrigo interpolated Swift’s song “Cruel Summer” from Swift’s 2019 album Lover on her song “déjà vu.” The song was written by Swift, Jack Antonoff, and singer St. Vincent, and was produced by Swift and Antonoff. first covered “Cruel Summer” in 2020, and her love of Swift dates back even further.
