‘On My Block’: Everything We Know About the ‘Freeridge’ Spinoff
On Sept. 27, Netflix announced the hit young adult series On My Block will get a spinoff series titled Freeridge. The news comes after the original series will premiere its fourth and final season. Set in the same neighborhood as On My Block, the spinoff delves into a new narrative. Here’s everything we know so far about the Freeridge spinoff series.
‘Freeridge’ centers around a new group of friends
Freeridge is the name of the fictional LA neighborhood in On My Block. The spinoff series will follow a new group of friends who may have “unleashed a deadly curse,” kicking off a new adventure.
During the original show’s run, On My Block tackled gang violence, PTSD, and more. The coming of age series received positive reviews from critics and audiences, with an 8 out of 10 rating on IMDb and 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, the series stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Julio Macias.
Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s Head of Comedy, recently told Variety: “While this chapter is closing for our OG squad this October as they reach the end of High School. We are excited to bring a brand new cast of characters and stories to life in this On My Block spinoff. There are so many more stories to tell in Freeridge, and we’re grateful to continue this journey with Lauren, Eddie, Jeremy, Jamie Uyeshiro, and Jamie Dooner.”
‘On My Block’ showrunner Lauren Iungerich will join the new project
The streaming giant announced On My Block showrunner/co-creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft will return for the spinoff series. In addition, co-producer Jamie Uyeshiro and co-executive producer Jamie Dooner will join as well.
Uyeshiro, Gonzalez, and Haft said in a statement, “Some of the greatest comments we’ve heard about On My Block were from fans telling us that they felt seen and represented.”
“As we embark on Freeridge, a more female-driven show. We will continue to invest in authentic characters that represent our passionate audience,” the statement continued. “Oh, and there may be gnomies.”
When is the ‘Freeridge’ spinoff premiering on Netflix?
There’s limited information about the cast, characters, and overall plot of the Freeridge spinoff. Additionally, there is no official release date for the new Netflix series. Although Lauren Iungerich will not return as the showrunner, Uyeshiro, Gonzalez, and Haft will take on the role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iungerich issued a statement that read, “Co-creating and running On My Block was and will always be a highlight of my life.”
She continued, “I am so proud to pass the baton to my incredible partners Eddie, Jeremy, and the incomparable Jamie Uyeshiro, who rocked it in the writer’s room from day one.”
The fourth and final season of On My Block premiered Oct. 4, 2021. The official Netflix synopsis reads: “Season 4 finds our friends two years later, having gone their separate ways. When a secret is unburied, they quickly learn you can’t run from the past. And they will need to stick together to survive.”
All four seasons of On My Block are streaming now on Netflix.
