Oscars 2022: ‘Cinderella’ Is Leading to Win New Fan Favorite Award
The 2022 Academy Awards is quickly approaching, and audiences are posting their predictions on social media. However, the award show alienated countless viewers with film nominations that aren’t accessible to mainstream audiences. So the 2022 Oscars wants to increase its relevance with a new Fan Favorite award, but Cinderella is unexpectedly leading the polls.
‘Cinderella’ is a romantic musical starring Camila Cabello
The newest iteration of Cinderella is based on Charles Perrault’s original fairy tale that goes by the same name. Blockers filmmaker Kay Cannon is the writer and director behind the romantic musical. The story follows the familiar tale, as Cinderella (Camila Cabello) chases big dreams. However, she’ll need the help of her Fabulous Godmother (Billy Porter) to help her achieve those goals.
Cinderella opened to mostly negative reviews from critics and mixed reviews from audiences. It holds a 43% critic score and a 60% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus notes that the music is infectious and successfully modernizes an old tale. However, the criticisms point out “flat acting” and “clunky dialogue.”
‘Cinderella’ is leading the polls in the new Oscars 2022 Fan Favorite award
For 2022, the Oscars introduced a Fan Favorite award category. It allows Twitter users to vote for their favorite movie of the year using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite. Voting takes place from Feb. 14 through March 3.
The Fan Favorite category does not award a physical Oscar statue to the winner, although it will be broadcast during the ceremony.
Many folks expected Spider-Man: No Way Home to instantly take home the Fan Favorite award. However, Cinderella is shockingly leading the polls. According to Deadline, Cinderella could very well take home the Oscars 2022 Fan Favorite award.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is also tracking well, although it isn’t even eligible as it’s simply a new cut of a movie that hit theaters in a previous year. However, that isn’t stopping fans from gushing about Zack Snyder’s film that hit HBO Max.
The Oscars Fan Favorite award could be a recurring category
2022 is the first year to offer an Oscars Fan Favorite award during the ceremony. However, it could change how future ceremonies operate. This could become a permanent award, although the academy might decide to modify certain aspects of the category.
Nevertheless, the academy invented the category to honor a crowd-pleaser, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home. But not many people would have guessed that Cinderella would lead the new Oscars category. Some folks believe that Twitter is simply poking fun at the Oscars.
However, Cabello starring in the lead role likely is giving the movie a boost. She has a large fan base that could be promoting the votes. It ultimately depends on how the academy receives the winner. This could result in the Fan Favorite award disappearing as quickly as it started.
The 2022 Academy Awards ceremony takes place on March 27.
