Oscars 2022: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Could Win Big in 2 Categories
Although Spider-Man: No Way Home was the highest-grossing film of 2021, the 2022 Oscars only nominated the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in one category. Fans, and Jimmy Kimmel, were upset that the third MCU Spider-Man film didn’t earn a nod in the Best Picture race. However, the movie could still take home two awards, thanks to a new category.
What awards could ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ win at the 2022 Oscars?
The academy nominated Spider-Man: No Way Home for Best Visual Effects at the 2022 Oscars. The other films up for the award include Dune, No Time to Die, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Free Guy. Marvel films notoriously only get nods in the Best Visual Effects category, but they have never won it. However, there is another award that the Marvel movie could take home at the 2022 ceremony.
The academy introduced a new category in 2022 titled Oscars Fan Favorite. From Feb. 14 till March 3, fans got the chance to vote for their favorite film of the year via the academy’s website or by using the #OscarsFanFavorite hashtag on Twitter. And immediately after the news dropped, fans started tweeting their heart out in support of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
So Spider-Man: No Way Home could take home two awards, for Best Visual Effects and the Fan Favorite movie, at the 2022 Oscars.
What are the chances that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is a winner at the 2022 Oscars?
Unfortunately, Spider-Man: No Way Home likely won’t win in the Best Visual Effects category at the 2022 Oscars. As mentioned above, an MCU film has never won that award before, not even Black Panther. Plus, many media outlets predict that Dune is the favorite to win. However, an upset is always a possibility.
There’s an excellent chance that the third MCU Spider-Man movie wins the Oscars Fan Favorite award. And if we’re being honest, Spider-Man: No Way Home would have swept this year’s ceremony if fans were able to vote in more categories. Thankfully for Tom Holland and co., they have a say in one award.
Tom Holland and producers wanted the academy to nominate the film for Best Picture
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland, Amy Pascal, and Kevin Feige expressed their desire for the Oscars to nominate Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2022. The article was published before the academy announced the nominees.
“I’ve made Marvel movies. And I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars. And the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other,” Holland shared. “But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters — it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So, I do think they’re real art.”
Pascal, a producer of Spider-Man: No Way Home, said, “Just because they’re a certain kind of genre doesn’t mean they’re not quality movies. We all got in this business to make movies that people want to see, that make people feel things. And I think this movie legitimately does that.”
Feige added, “It’s a good thing when people are in a theater, and they stand up and cheer. It’s a good thing when people are wiping tears because they’re thinking back on their last 20 years of moviegoing and what it has meant to them. That, to me, is a very good thing — the sort of thing the academy was founded, back in the day, to recognize.”
To see if Spider-Man: No Way Home wins any awards, tune in to the 2022 Oscars on Sunday, March 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
