Oscars 2022: Will Smith and Chris Rock Settled Their Feud After the Ceremony, According to Diddy
The moment that everyone is talking about from the Academy Awards is when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage on live TV. It’s a moment that no one saw coming and it was hard to believe that it was real. Tensions between Smith and Rock were high. However, Sean “Diddy” Combs said that the two were able to reconcile and settle their feud after the show.
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith
How did the Fresh Prince himself become so consumed with rage that he slapped Chris Rock in front of millions of people? It began with a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will’s wife and mother to their two children.
During the ceremony, Rock came out to tell some jokes, as comedians do, but he took it a step too far. He said to Jada “G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” The G.I. Jane joke is referring to Jada’s buzzcut hairstyle, comparing it to Demi Moore’s character in the film. Jada has been very open about dealing with alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, and was visibly annoyed by the joke.
In her defense, Will walked on stage and slapped Rock across the face, shocking the crowd and viewers worldwide. While everything after this was censored, uncensored versions showed Will saying “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!” The tension that followed afterward was awkward, especially as the show attempted to move forward.
Diddy says that Will Smith and Chris Rock were able to reconcile after the ceremony
Diddy was one of the presenters at the Academy Awards. He was one of the first people to come out after the slap happened and tried to defuse the situation.
“Will and Chris, we’re gonna solve that like family at the gold party,” Diddy said during the show. “But right now, we’re moving on with love.”
According to Page Six, Diddy confirmed at the Vanity Fair Oscars bash that the two were able to settle their differences. The duo had “arranged to work out their issues after the Academy Awards.”
“That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that,” Diddy stated. “It’s all love. They’re brothers.”
Will Smith apologized to the Academy during his Oscar acceptance speech
Besides slapping Chris Rock, Smith had another historic moment when he won his first Best Actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard. During his speech, Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees. However, he did not apologize to Rock.
“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all of my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment, and I’m not crying for winning an award,” Smith said. “It’s not about winning an award for me; it’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people.”
He also compared himself to his character Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, saying he would do anything to protect his family. He also shared a quote Washington told him after the slap, “At your highest moment, be careful — that’s when the devil comes for you.”
