The Academy Awards is often criticized for honoring movies that no one has seen. This year, in hopes of addressing this, the Academy made the interesting decision to allow fans to vote on Twitter for two different categories. While many expected Spider-Man: No Way Home or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to take the top prize, Zack Snyder movies ended up winning both categories.

The Oscars has been trying to honor more popular movies

Ratings for the Academy Awards have been dipping in recent years. Part of this is due to a lack of awareness of the nominated movies. Many casual moviegoers haven’t seen many of the nominees, and blockbuster films that do well at the box office are typically ignored. To address this, the Academy introduced a fan-favorite movie category that fans would vote on.

The Oscars had another category for most cheer-worthy moment that Twitter also voted for. In 2018, the Academy introduced a category for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. However, they walked back this decision after facing a lot of backlash from the internet as it just seemed like a desperate way to bring in ratings.

Zack Snyder fans showed up to celebrate the director’s movies

Zack Snyder fans wanted to bring attention to the director, as Snyder ended up on top of both categories. For the most cheer-worthy movie moment of all time, The Flash (Ezra Miller) entering the speed force in Zack Snyder’s Justice League beat other noteworthy scenes like the Avengers assembling in Avengers: Endgame and the three spider-men swinging together in No Way Home

For the fan-favorite movie of 2021, Snyder’s Army of the Dead took first place. The Netflix zombie heist film beat Cinderella, starring Camila Cabello, along with Minamata, No Way Home, and Tick, Tick…Boom!. Allowing fans to vote appears to have backfired on the Oscars as many voters participated either to push an agenda or completely troll the awards ceremony.

Fans continue to voice their desire to restore Zack Snyder’s DC universe

Part of the reason why Snyder’s movie did so well was due to the fans who want Snyder to return to the DC universe. Zack Snyder’s Justice League came after #ReleaseTheSnyderCut became a popular movement on Twitter. Many fans were displeased with Joss Whedon’s version of Justice League and wanted Snyder’s full vision to be seen.

This movement was successful as the 4-hour Snyder cut was released on HBO Max. However, they’re clearly not satisfied, as many want the Snyderverse to be restored so that Snyder can complete his full story. Army of the Dead won because Zack Snyder’s Justice League was deemed ineligible due to not being a theatrical release.

While Snyder fans are very passionate about this, the odds of Snyder returning to DC are low. DC is moving in a different direction with their films, and it also doesn’t appear like Henry Cavill or Ben Affleck are returning as Superman and Batman for the long-term. It’s nice to see fans voice their support for the director, but they probably won’t win this time.
