Netflix‘s Outer Banks became an instant hit when the first season debuted in the spring of 2020. Now that season 2 is over, many fans are looking forward to Outer Banks Season 3. Here’s what we know so far about the future of Outer Banks, including when season 3 might drop and plans for season 4.

‘Outer Banks’ Season 2 ending explained

At the end of Outer Banks Season 2, John B. (Chase Stokes), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), and the Pogues are deserted on an island they dub “Poguelandia.” They successfully escaped the clutches of Ward Cameron (Charles Esten), but they had to leave behind the Cross of Santo Domingo — a driving force in season 2 and Pope’s (Jonathan Daviss) birthright.

Meanwhile, Carla Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell) was still after the mythical healing shroud once hidden inside the gold cross at the end of the second season. In a shocking turn of events, Limbrey met Big John Rutledge (Charles Halford) in the Caribbean. He promised to help her find the shroud in exchange for helping John B. out of the mess he’s in with Ward Cameron.

It’s unclear how Big John knows what’s going on in John B.’s life, since he was presumed dead in season 1. Outer Banks fans expect Big John to play a major role in season 3 with the possibility of an emotional reunion between father and son.

Updates on ‘Outer Banks’ Seasons 3 and 4

Outer Banks creator and showrunner Jonas Pate has had big plans for the show since the beginning. “Ever since we started, we always viewed it as something that was probably like a four-season, maybe five-season show, but definitely four seasons,” he told Entertainment Weekly in April 2020. “We’ve sort of long-arced it out pretty far. I’m just hoping that we get a chance to actually tell those stories.”

Showrunners have been tightlipped about future seasons of Outer Banks — until now. A source close to the Netflix series told Small Screen scripts for seasons 3 and 4 are being “finished.”

“Season 3 should start filming this year,” the source added. They’re expecting the new season to come out in the middle of 2022. At this time, Netflix has yet to confirm details about season 3. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reached out to the streaming giant for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.

Questions that need answers in season 3

Limbrey played a significant role in the Pogues’ lives in season 2. By the end of the season, we know Limbrey is still after the shroud. But what’s her long-term plan? Will she make a deal with Big John to get back at Ward, who double-crossed both of them in the past?

Moreover, what will happen to the Pogues? At the end of season 2, they add a new member to the group — Cleo (Carlacia Grant). Initially, Cleo worked for Captain Terrance (Terence Rosemore), who wanted in on the millions of dollars in gold John B. and Sarah Cameron were after. Eventually, Cleo became part of the Pogues, but will that continue in season 3? Cleo could be playing a long-term game and only out to serve herself.
