‘Outer Banks’ Star Madelyn Cline Recalls Terrifying Moment With Rats on Set: ‘I Was Screaming Bloody Murder!’
It isn’t always stunning beach views and finding lost treasure for the cast of Outer Banks. At one point while filming season 4 of the Netflix original series, which premiered on Oct. 10, 2024, star Madelyn Cline found herself getting up close and personal with a rat. What the actor thought when she saw rats on set and how it ended up in her hair, ahead.
Cline didn’t want to be rat ‘food’ filming ‘Outer Banks’ Season 4 scene
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cline opened up about filming one Outer Banks Season 4 scene with rats. A double whammy for the 26-year-old actor, it had her interacting with a rat in a “tight space,” something she’d previously done—and disliked—on the show.
“The last time they put me in a small, tight space, they had to medicate me,” Cline said. “So I read [the script] and I was like, ‘Not only are we in another tight place, but there’s rats?’”
Although she was told not to “worry” because the rats were “trained,” it did nothing to calm Cline’s nerves. “They were like, ‘Don’t worry, they’re trained!’ which just means food-motivated,” she explained. “But I went up to the cages and it said, ‘Don’t feed the rats!’” At that she thought to herself, “Wait, so they’re hungry? Am I the food?”
The ‘Outer Banks’ star’s moment of being an ‘island’ to a rat
Cline continued, explaining how a rat ended up on her head. Although she sang Pate’s praises— “Jonas, I love you”—and the crew’s too, she wasn’t exactly looking forward to shooting the scene. “The set was amazing, but it wasn’t my favorite,” she said.
“At one point, Jonas was like to our rat wrangler, ‘Drop it on her head!’” she continued, noting that the addition of the rat combined with the water she was swimming in, put her over the edge.
“I was neck-deep in water, so I was already freaking out,” Cline said. “I looked like an island to the rat who’s trying to save itself from drowning, as am I. The rat crawls up and it gets in my hair. I was screaming bloody murder!”
Cline previously said she’s ‘ready’ to move on from ‘Outer Banks’
The Outer Banks star’s time swimming with a rat on her head as Sarah Cameron, the daughter of a prominent family who teams up with the Pogues, could be over soon. Ahead of season 4’s release, Cline shared in an interview that she’s “ready” to take on new acting projects.
“I’ve spent the better part of six years with this cast and crew,” she told C Magazine. “I feel like I had my unofficial college years with them. They’ve seen me through so much. But wrapping up this season, there was a sense of looming finality.”
“The timing is right,” she continued. “I feel ready to differentiate myself, to explore new spaces, and have some wonder about stories that I haven’t been a part of telling.”
Part 2 of Outer Banks Season 4 is still to come, premiering in November. Meanwhile, Netflix has yet to confirm whether or not the series will be renewed for season 5.
