Outlander has given fans another look at the upcoming season 6. The Starz time-traveling drama released a photo to mark this year’s Met Gala theme of “American Independence.” But some fans shared their frustration over the new behind-the-scenes snap.

Season 6 of ‘Outlander’ is expected in early 2022

After a nearly 10-month delay due to the pandemic, the cast and crew of Outlander started filming season 6 in February 2021. Production continued until June, when filming wrapped. Due to “an unprecedented set of challenges,” showrunner Matthew B. Roberts revealed that the upcoming season would only have eight episodes.

Instead of attempting to film at least 12 episodes like they’ve done in past seasons, Outlander stopped at eight for season 6. They truncated the season “in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.”

Even with this decision, the current Droughtlander will end up lasting nearly two years. Season 5 finished airing in May 2020. And season 6 is expected to premiere in early 2022.  However, Roberts also promised an extra-long season 7 with 16 episodes to make up for the shortened season 6.

Celebrating America’s independence

As fans know, the upcoming season will take place in the months leading up to the American Revolutionary war. Fraser’s Ridge is part of colonial America in the mid-1770s. And the Outlander social media channels took the time to point this out while posting about the theme of the recent Met Gala, which was “American Independence.”

Outlander shared a photo of Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) from season 6. The image featured the couple on a bright summer day — dressed in their period costumes — having a serious conversation. In the caption they wrote, “Now they understood the Met Gala theme. #Outlander.”

‘Outlander’ fans share their frustration over the new behind-the-scenes snap

Some Outlander fans were thrilled to see a new image from the highly-anticipated upcoming season. One wrote, “The American fashion we like to see. Love these two.” Another added: “I love them,” with a heart emoji.

But others voiced their frustration because the photo wasn’t of the series’ main couple, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe).

“I like them [Brianna and Roger], but I’m really interested to watch the leaders of the show Sam and Caitriona and it worries me why don’t you share something about them with us?” one worried fan wrote. Another added: “We haven’t seen them in ‘ages.’”

Sam Heughan is ready to meet his fans again

Outlander fans might not have seen much of Claire and Jamie lately. But they’ll get the opportunity to see Heughan up close and personal at the Wizard World convention in Chicago on October 16.

The actor announced the news on social media, posting a pic of himself in character as Jamie. Heughan wrote, “So excited!!! Love Chicago, Wizards, Worlds and seeing everyone again!!!”

‘Outlander’ stars promise ‘turmoil’ in season 6

In an Outlander season 6 teaser clip that gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at production, Rankin promised fans “lots of new characters, lots of new relationships, lots of potential drama.” He then adds, “It’s what Outlander does so well.”

Balfe added that everyone is starting to find their feet, but some are struggling. And Heughan says that “the underlying theme of the season is definitely that there’s a lot more turmoil here”

“It’s a very exciting season,” Balfe promises.
