‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Leaves Fans Drooling As He Shows Off His ‘Perfect Shape’

No matter what kind of training Sam Heughan is doing, it's clear he is putting in some serious ab work and eating extremely clean. The ‘Outlander’ star recently posted a pic from his vacation that featured him doing pull-ups on the beach at the "Tulum Jungle Gym." His chiseled, washboard abs had fans drooling.

Outlander star Sam Heughan admits that his character Jamie Fraser takes his clothes off “quite a lot.” And that means the actor is committed to staying fit. During his recent vacation to Mexico, Heughan showed off his “perfect shape” while working out on the beach — and the image left fans drooling.

The ‘Outlander’ star says Jamie Fraser’s lifestyle gives him his body

When Heughan first landed the role of Jamie back in 2014, he wasn’t nearly as buff as he is now. According to Men’s Journal, he ran races and triathlons, trained martial arts and Muay Thai in Thailand, and did mostly body-weight workouts. The Scot took this approach to his fitness because “Jamie Fraser doesn’t have access to a gym.”

“It’s his lifestyle that gives him his body. He’s an outdoorsman, a fighter, and I wanted to build that sort of body,” Heughan explained.

Sam Heughan started lifting weights to add muscle

Heughan just started lifting weights seriously in recent years. With the help of his trainer, John Valbonesi, the 41-year-old added Olympic lifts into a custom-designed “CrossFit-like” program. The goal was to add muscle and definition on Heughan’s body, while avoiding injury.

When Heughan prepares for his non-Jamie roles — like Sebastian in 2017’s The Spy Who Dumped Me — the actor changes up his training. He’ll do a lot of fight training and stunt work. He also walks and jogs for 30 to 45 minutes every morning and evening, while throwing in sprints and mobility work.

“It was an interesting part of training,” Heughan recalled. “It’s not always about smashing your body, but it is about consistency and getting your heart rate up.”
