‘Outlander’ Season 5: Why Jamie Really Wants to Raise a Child With Claire
Outlander fans know that Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) never had the chance to raise a child together. Circumstances kept them apart and from raising Brianna (Sophie Skelton) together. In season 5, an opportunity arises where the two could be parents all over again. Read on to learn why Jamie really wants to raise a child with his wife Claire. There are spoilers ahead for episode 4 of season 5 of Outlander.
Jamie and Claire stumble upon a terrible set of circumstances
Jamie and Claire have to go and speak to the Beardsleys about Josiah and Keziah. What they encounter is grim to say the least. Mr. Beardsley suffered a stroke and was being slowly tortured by his wife, Mrs. Beardsley, who gives birth while Jamie and Claire are there.
Mrs. Beardsley ends up leaving her child and her old life behind. Jamie shoots Mr. Beardsley dead as he’s suffered a stroke and he tells him he wants to die. Claire and Jamie get the child to the next town to safety and some much-needed milk.
Jamie and Claire talk about raising the child together
Jamie and Claire steal a rare moment alone together while they are both a little intoxicated and enjoying themselves. Jamie tries to be serious and talk to Claire about raising the child they just rescued.
“There’s a question I want to ask you,” Jamie says to his wife.
“What?” Claire inquires.
“Do you want wee bonnie?” Jamie asks about the child. “Do you want to keep her? We have a big house. I’ve seen you wearing her Sassenach. I’ve seen how you would have looked with Bri. I thought maybe this would be the last chance for us to raise a bairn together.”
“What would you think if she stayed?” Claire asks Jamie.
“Here?” Jamie responds.
“It’s been suggested. Lucinda’s taken a liking to her,” Claire explains. “I think she needs our wee bonnie more than anyone. She’d be in good hands.”
Jamie is of course willing to do whatever he can for his wife, including giving her another child if that’s what she wants.
“I have no life but you Claire. But if you wanted another child, I thought that perhaps I might give you one,” Jamie explains to his wife. “One that you wouldn’t have to suffer carrying.”
“Please know that if it’s at all possible, I love you even more for wanting to take the chance. I also regret that we were never parents together. Regret isn’t reason enough,” Claire explains.
Why Jamie wants to raise a child with Claire so badly
Jamie always wanted to raise Brianna and he never got the chance. He regrets not being a father throughout her entire life, and so it’s hard for him to just let this child go as well. He also wants to make his wife happy, and he’s willing to do anything in that regard. However, Claire knows that the baby would be better off with Lucinda considering all the factors at play.
At least Jamie and Claire have their daughter Brianna and her son Jemmy in their lives.
