Outlander star Caitriona Balfe surprised fans this past summer when she revealed she had given birth to a baby boy. Balfe and her husband — music producer Tony McGill — welcomed their son in August, just a few weeks after filming for Outlander season 6 wrapped.

The Irish beauty recently admitted that since her son’s arrival, she and McGill have been living a “slightly nomadic” life with their newborn.

The ‘Outlander’ star filmed season 6 while pregnant

After a lengthy production delay due to the pandemic, filming for season 6 of Outlander finally began in January 2021. The cast and crew shot eight episodes for the shortened season over the next few months, and production wrapped in June.

During those six months, Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) says that his on-screen wife “got big” as her pregnancy progressed. So, they had to get creative and shoot around Balfe’s (Claire Fraser) growing belly.

Caitriona Balfe didn’t know she was pregnant when they started filming season 6

The Outlander cast and crew were more than ready to get started on season 6 after being on pause for almost a year. But it appears as though Balfe didn’t know she was pregnant when filming started. Or, at least, she hadn’t told producers yet.

At New York Comic Con, Heughan said that when Outlander producers found out about Balfe’s pregnancy, they had to quickly make some changes.

“When they knew [Caitriona was pregnant], they had to really move everything around so we could shoot her out before she got too big… and she got big,” Heughan said, per Hello! Magazine.

In addition to a new season of Outlander, Balfe is also starring in the new film Belfast alongside Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan. The 42-year-old recently penned a column for The Wall Street Journal ahead of the film’s release, and she revealed that she’s been living a “slightly nomadic life” with McGill and their newborn.

“Today, my husband, Tony, and I and our son are slightly nomadic. We split our time between Glasgow and London. When I’m working on Outlander, we’re in Glasgow,” she wrote.

Balfe continued by giving fans a little insight into her private life, writing that she has a “lovely” apartment in Glasgow that’s located in a historic building.

“In Glasgow, we live in a lovely Edwardian terrace apartment with high ceilings and moldings,” Balfe wrote. “There’s something beautiful about historic buildings. At home in Scotland, I often find myself wondering about the lives of people who lived there before us.”

The ‘Outlander’ star is extremely private

The new article from Balfe gave fans a rare glimpse into the life of the notoriously private actor. She kept her pregnancy a secret from the public, which meant fans didn’t know she was going to be a mom until after the baby arrived.

When Balfe posted her son’s birth announcement, she didn’t reveal his name or any birth stats. She didn’t even give fans a look at his face. Instead, Balfe posted a black-and-white pic of her son’s tiny hand gripping her finger.
