Patricia Field, The Costume Designer for ‘Sex and the City’, Explains Why She Loved Working With Sarah Jessica Parker
Patricia Field has had a pretty storied career as a costume designer, even if she entered the industry a little later in life. Her biggest job found her styling the stars of HBO’s Sex and the City for six seasons and two movies. Field spoke about her time on the set back in 2018. She explained exactly why she enjoyed working with the actor who portrayed Carrie Bradshaw.
Patricia Field said working with Sarah Jessica Parker was easy
Field noted that it’s not always easy to work in Hollywood. While she felt incredibly supported during her foray into costume design in the 1980s and 1990s, she noted that working with Sarah Jessica Parker was particularly delightful.

In an interview with Repeller in 2018, Field said that Parker was easy to work with because she views herself as a fashionista. She said working with someone who loves clothes makes her job easier, and Parker is one of those people. She told the publication, “ As a costume designer, I love working with an actor who is interested in fashion. It’s like playing tennis — you want someone on the other side of the net who’s a good tennis player, otherwise there’s no game.”
Patricia Field has been nominated for several Emmys for her work on Sex and the City
Field has won one Emmy for her work on Sex and the City and has been nominated for several more. During her time on Sex and the City, the stylist received five Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Costume Design in a Series category. She only won the category once, though.
Field’s Emmy win came in 2002, for the episode “Defining Moments.” In the episode, which aired during the show’s fourth season, Carrie Bradshaw began a relationship with a chaotic Jazz musician, and Charlotte York grappled with Trey McDougal’s newfound sex drive. Field was also nominated in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 for her work on the series.
Patricia Field has a favorite costume from Sex and the City
After her success with Sex and the City, Field has served as a costume designer on several other projects. She worked on Ugly Betty and the film adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. Still, she is best known for Sex and the City. Field has spoken extensively about her time on the series, and she has a favorite outfit and a least favorite outfit.
Field’s favorite costume also happens to be the most expensive. She has noted that she loved the Atelier Versace gown that Carrie wore in the show’s final episode. She spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the outfit, stating, “hat gown is huge. I set that gown over the bed, and it literally covered the bed. It was the perfect princess moment.” The dress retailed for $80,000.
