Patrick Mahomes, Paul Rudd, and the late, great Anthony Bourdain have one thing in common. They all love Kansas City barbecue. And, they all agree that the place to eat barbecue in the city of fountains is at Joe’s Kansas City (formerly Oklahoma Joe’s).
Patrick Mahomes orders Joe’s Kansas City barbecue from Postmates
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is a Texas native. But he’s got a lot of love in his heart for his new hometown. During a 2019 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Mahomes revealed that he loves being a part of the Kansas City community.
“I love it, I honestly do. I mean, look we’ve got the Chiefs fans, Chiefs Kingdom, right here … Kansas city is such an amazing city and they’ve really embraced me coming there. I love being there and I love being a part of the community and a part of that organization,” Mahomes said.
The QB also revealed that he loves Joe’s. And there’s one thing on the menu that he orders from Postmates “probably once every two weeks.”
It’s all about the Z-Man sandwich
The one menu item that Mahomes orders from Postmates more than any other is Joe’s Z-Man sandwich. This incredible treat is stacked with brisket, smoked provolone, barbecue sauce, and onion rings.
According to KSHB-TV, one of Mahomes’ Postmates orders from Joe’s Kansas City was a massive feast. It included french fries, beans, smoked turkey, a full slab dinner, pulled pork, potato salad, a pound of turkey, two Z-Mans, and beef brisket, plus another full slab of ribs and Texas toast.
Paul Rudd agrees with Patrick Mahomes
Marvel star Paul Rudd moved to Kansas City when he was 10. But he didn’t discover the wonderful world of Kansas City barbecue until he became an adult. Now, even though he doesn’t live in KC anymore, he still makes barbecue a priority.
“There’s a great sandwich called the Z-Man Sandwich at a spot called Joe’s KC. I think it’s maybe my favorite sandwich in the world,” Rudd explained to bon appétit. “It’s brisket, and it’s got provolone cheese, onion rings, and barbecue sauce. There are pickles, and you get it with coleslaw. They do seasoned french fries that are pretty outstanding too.”
Joe’s isn’t the only choice for barbecue in Kansas City
Because he loves the Z-Man so much, Rudd orders Joe’s Z-Man sandwich kits and has them delivered to his home in New York City every year for his fantasy football draft.
“I’ve even ordered the sandwiches and had them flown to New York where I live, with the Z-Man Sandwich kits. They send the brisket, and the buns, and the onion rings already kind of already pre-made,”
“And then you heat it up and assemble it when you get it. I host a fantasy football draft with all my buddies, and so I started ordering the sandwiches every year for our draft at the end of summer.”
Joe’s Z-Man Sandwich is definitely popular. But with Kansas City being world-famous for its barbecue, it’s not the only option in the KC metro.
“There are different places that do different things—people like LC’s for burnt ends, Jack Stack, Gates, Arthur Bryant’s—but I really crave that Z-Man Sandwich,” Rudd said.
The late, great Anthony Bourdain loved Joe’s, just like Patrick Mahomes and Paul Rudd
In 2011, Bourdain wrote a piece for Men’s Health titled “13 Places to Eat Before You Die.” On his must-visit list was Joe’s Kansas City. But at the time, it was known as Oklahoma Joe’s.
“People may disagree on who has the best BBQ,” Bourdain acknowledged. “Here [at Joe’s], the brisket (particularly the burnt ends), pulled pork, and ribs are all of a quality that meet the high standards even of Kansas City natives. It’s the best BBQ in Kansas City, which makes it the best BBQ in the world.”
