Fans of Saved by the Bell won’t have a chance to see another group of students work their way through Bayside High. Peacock has canceled the much-anticipated reboot after just two seasons. The show’s second season was released in November 2021, and fans were awaiting news of a renewal. Saved by the Bell is yet another series that has been axed by a streaming provider in recent weeks.

Peacock ends ‘Saved by the Bell’ after two seasons

Deadline has reported that Peacock has opted to end Saved by the Bell following the release of its sophomore season in November 2021. The cancelation comes as a shock to both fans and critics. In April, the series took home a statue for Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards.

Each year, the statue is awarded to a comedy series for its excellence in depicting LGBTQ characters, themes, and issues. Saved by the Bell had been largely praised for taking a classic series and retooling it to address the problems facing teens today. According to Deadline, Peacock announced the cancelation to the cast and crew on May 3.

What is ‘Saved by the Bell’ about?

Saved by the Bell followed a brand new class of Bayside High School students as they navigated the 21st century and its unique problems. Season 1 opened with Bayside’s notoriously privileged student body and incoming lower-income students figuring out how to work together.

The transfers were part of an initiative implemented by Zack Morris, then the governor of California, after his administration received backlash for closing down underfunded schools. Mark-Paul Gosselaar reprised the role of Zack. Jessie Spano, the former Bayside overachiever, appeared as a guidance counselor, while her high school sweetheart, A.C. Slater served as a teacher and coach. Elizabeth Berkley Lauren took on the role of Jessie Spano. Berkley Lauren portrayed the character in the 1990s. Mario Lopez reprised his role as A.C. Slater, as well.

Peacock’s decision to end the show leaves fans on a cliffhanger. While the season 2 finale saw Jessie and A.C. begin to rekindle their decades-ago romance, fans didn’t get a definitive answer. They’ll have to deal with not knowing what happened after the kiss.

Streaming providers appear to be cutting original content at an alarming rate

Saved by the Bell isn’t the only series to receive a surprise cancelation. Several original projects have been axed, and it seems no streaming service provider is safer than the others. In January, Peacock canceled Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. After critics panned the 10-episode season, Peacock opted not to let the series find its identity.
