‘Peaky Blinders’ Creator Hints at Spinoff Shows After Season 6 — But He’s Not Creating Them

'Peaky Blinders' Season 6 marks the end of the road for the BBC series, but it looks like Shelby family fans will get more content in the form of a movie. Not only that, but show creator Steven Knight hinted spinoff shows could happen -- though, he won't be the one to create them. Here's what's going on.

Peaky Blinders Season 6 marks the end for the Shelby family — at least, that’s what fans suspect. While show creator Steven Knight said season 6 is the last season of the show, it seems fans will still get to experience more of the Shelbys via a Peaky Blinders film and possible spinoff shows. But Knight said he won’t take part in creating the shows.

Is ‘Peaky Blinders’ based on true events? Show creator Steven Knight used his family history

Peaky Blinders brings viewers through the world of Thomas Shelby (played by actor Cillian Murphy) and his family. The first season shows Tommy navigating the world of gangster crime through Birmingham, England, after World War I. Now, in Peaky Blinders Season 6, we expect to see a fantastic finale to Tommy’s world — especially after someone close to him betrayed him at the end of season 5.

So, is Peaky Blinders based on true events? While the Peaky gang existed as a real gang, Tommy Shelby remains a fictional character. But Knight took his family history to inform the show, as his father often talked about the real-life gang.

“He said they were immaculately dressed,” Knight told journalist Andrew Billen for the Royal Television Society. “Razor blades, guns, drinking beer and whisky out of jam jars.”

Additionally, Knight commented on how he grew up — and what his parents experienced. “Mum and dad’s childhood was set against a supporting cast of war casualties and victims of circumstance,” he wrote, according to GQ. “Times were hard and life was often brutal, dangerous, and harsh. … Sanitation was almost non-existent. Men fought, women fought back, and children sat in the shadows and watched.”

With Peaky Blinders Season 6 on the horizon, fans can’t wait to see how Thomas Shelby’s story comes to a close. Does Thomas Shelby die? Is Grace Shelby alive? And will Michael Gray take over the family business? We hope to get all of these answers and more in the final season. But what comes after season 6?

According to Knight, spinoffs — though, he won’t call them that — could happen. He told Variety his final project with Peaky Blinders will be a show. From there, his hands are off.

“And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it,” Knight said about the. movie. But he then mentioned “shows related” may crop up, though he wants to “pass on the baton” to other writers, directors, and producers.

It doesn’t sound as if other writers have solid plans for future related shows, though. Perhaps Knight will miss the Shelby family and want to hop back into the story.
