‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 6: Show Creator Says He’s ‘Blowing the Bridge Up’ to Thomas Shelby’s Happiness
Peaky Blinders Season 6 is coming soon, and fans can’t wait to see the stunning conclusion of Thomas Shelby’s character arc. Earlier seasons showed Tommy (played by Cillian Murphy) falling in love with Grace and marrying her. Sadly, she later died, and he’s still impacted by her death. Now, show creator Steven Knight says he’s “blowing the bridge up” for Thomas and other Shelby family members to find happiness in the last season.

Thomas Shelby lives a solitary life as the patriarch of the family and leader of Shelby Company Limited. In Peaky Blinders Season 1, he met Grace — and the two became lovers, eventually getting married and having a child. Unfortunately, leading up to Peaky Blinders Season 6, fans see Tommy in total disarray after Grace’s ghost seems to visit him from beyond the grave.
So, what happens to Grace in Peaky Blinders? During a formal event, Grace and Tommy begin dancing — and a stray bullet seemingly meant for Tommy strikes Grace, killing her. After that, Tommy’s never the same. He has major difficulty dealing with his grief and establishing new relationships despite his marriage later on to the former prostitute, Lizzie. Grace and Tommy also had a son together, Charlie. Tommy and Lizzie have a daughter together, Ruby.

What’s to come for Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders Season 6? During the season 5 finale, Tommy, along with the rest of the Peaky Blinders, create a plan to assassinate Oswald Mosley. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry, sending Tommy into a tailspin as he wonders who betrayed him and foiled his plan.
Additionally, fans anticipate seeing Polly Gray’s devastation in the new season, too. Aberama Gold, her lover, gets killed during the foiled assassination plot.
Show creator Steven Knight spoke at the BFI London Film Festival about Tommy’s mental state going into the new season, express.co.uk reports. “Tommy was locked up and frozen inside for a long time,” Knight explained. “Then he met Grace and she changed things, she unlocked the doors a bit. Then as soon as that happens, it gets closed down again because she gets killed. What I keep doing with these characters is offering them a road to happiness and then blowing the bridge up and not letting them go down it.”
So, does Thomas Shelby die? It seems he may die by suicide at the end of season 5, but Knight offers a different perspective. “It’s OK to say, ‘I don’t give a toss if I get killed, it doesn’t bother me,’ but when you have kids it’s different, because then it’s not just you, it’s them,” the show creator added.
The show will end with season 6
Is Peaky Blinders over? Fans would love for the show to continue beyond Peaky Blinders Season 6. But Knight confirmed this season marks the last. However, fans will still see more of the Shelby family. Knight has a film inspired by the show in the works. According to express.co.uk, Knight will start filming in late 2022 and hopes to release the film by 2024.
So, when will Peaky Blinders Season 6 premiere? BBC nor the show creator have given any official announcement, but a Twitter announcement noted fans can expect the season in 2022.
