Fans have been waiting to find out who will play the lead role of Percy Jackson in the new Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is based on the book series of the same name by Rick Riordan. Finally, that wait is over. Disney has found its Percy Jackson.

Walker Scobell joins the ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ cast

Walker Scobell will star as Percy Jackson in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, according to a report from Variety. Riordan also announced the news on his blog.

The series tells the story of Percy, a young boy who discovers he is a demigod, a half-human, half-god. According to the report, Percy is just learning how to use his powers when he’s accused on stealing Zeus’s lightning and must embark on a quest to clear his name and save Olympus.

Most recently, Scobell starred in the Netflix original movie, The Adam Project, alongside Ryan Reynolds.

Walker Scobell is much younger than Logan Lerman when he played Percy Jackson

In Riordan’s books, Percy is 12 years old when readers are introduced to the lead character in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

According to Celebs Week, Scobell was born on Jan. 6, 2009. He is 13 years old.

The comparisons between Scobell and Logan Lerman have already begun. Lerman starred as Percy Jackson in the movies based on Rick Riordan’s book series. At the time the first movie premiered, Lerman was 18 years old. When Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters premiered, Lerman was 21 years old.

Clearly, Disney is going in a different and much younger direction with the new series. That’s probably for the best for several reasons. The TV series should feel much more like the book series for fans. There are five books in Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, so there’s a lot more room for the series to grow with Scobell and the rest of the cast.

Had five Percy Jackson movies been made with two or three years in between each movie, Lerman likely would have been in his 30s when the story came to an end.

Disney has not announced the rest of the ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ cast yet

Scobell is the only Percy Jackson cast member that Disney has announced so far. Fans are eager to find out who will play Percy’s best friends, Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, along with Sally Jackson, Chiron, Luke Castellan, Poseidon, Zeus, and all of the Gods.

Fans should find out the rest of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast soon.

Production on Percy Jackson and the Olympians is slated to begin on June 1, 2022, according to a blog post from Rick Riordan. Filming will take place in Vancouver, BC.

With such a late start to production this year, it’s unlikely Disney would be able to release the series this year, but next year looks promising. Fans will have to wait until Disney announces more information to know when the series will be released.
