Pete Davidson Stars in ‘The King of Staten Island’ — Will It Be Released in Theaters?
Pete Davidson has made a real name for himself on Saturday Night Live, and now he’s making his way to movies as well. He co-wrote The King of Staten Island with Judd Apatow and Dave Sirus, and the highly anticipated movie will be here sooner than you may think. Read on to learn more about the movie, Pete Davidson’s role, and whether or not it will be released in theaters.
What’s the movie about?
The movie is based on Davidson’s own life and he plays the main character, Scott. According to Deadline, Scott has been struggling since his father, who was a firefighter, died when he was just a child. Now an adult, Scott hasn’t done a whole lot and he enjoys smoking weed and hanging with his friends. Although he wants to be a tattoo artist, it hasn’t amounted to much and he’s just barely coasting through life.
When Scott’s mother (Marisa Tomei) begins dating a firefighter (Bill Burr), it brings a lot of turmoil up for him. Although he doesn’t like this new man in his mom’s life, it helps Scott deal with what he’s kept bottled up inside for so many years involving the loss of his father.
Will ‘The King of Staten Island’ be released in theaters?
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), many things have been canceled or delayed, including numerous movie releases. The King of Staten Island was supposed to be released in theaters on June 12, but it will instead keep the same release date, but come out on demand, according to Entertainment Weekly. At the time of publishing, it was unclear if the movie will also make its debut in theaters as well at a later date.
Judd Apatow says the film is ‘an imagining’ of what Pete Davidson’s life might have been like without comedy
Apatow spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming movie and how it’s actually an “imagining” of Davidson’s life if he hadn’t found comedy, which “gave him direction.” It’s a whole new side to Davidson that fans will get to see, and that’s an exciting prospect.
“The movie is an imagining of what Pete’s life might have been like if he never found comedy,” Apatow revealed. “Comedy really was his savior, it gave him direction. And in the movie he’s someone who is flailing about, not sure what he should do with his life. He wants to be a tattoo artist but he really hasn’t tried that hard. A lot of what we discussed was how when you have a loss in your family it brings up all of these issues that take a long time to work through. By writing this movie and thinking through his life, he hopefully had a cathartic experience trying to let go of a lot of the obstacles that have complicated his life.”
See the all-new trailer
The trailer was just released for The King of Staten Island and it’s extremely compelling. It starts with Davidson as Scott hanging out on a couch with some people. Someone asks about the numbers on his arm, and Scott tells them it’s the date his dad died in a fire. One of the people there makes a crude joke about his dad no longer being around, to which Scott tries to laugh it off.
Scott clearly has some grief that he hasn’t come to terms with. Fans of Pete Davidson can see a different side to him when the movie drops on demand on June 12.
