Portugal the Man Kicks Off Governors Ball Performance With a Special ‘Beavis and Butthead’ Cartoon
With a Nirvana cover and a David Bowie cover, Portugal the Man truly made their Governors Ball Music Festival performance special for listeners. They even included an introduction from the cartoon characters Beavis & Butthead.
Portugal the Man performed at New York City’s Governors Ball Music Festival
According to Beavis & Butthead, this rock band is better than the Beatles and better than the Rolling Stones.
Hot off of the heels of their release “Steal My Sunshine,” Portugal the Man appeared at New York City’s outdoor music festival, Governors Ball. They performed on Friday, Sept. 24 on the Bacardi stage.
Some band members wore New York-themed outfits, including Zachary Carothers, who sported a Rangers jersey with his name on the back.
Portugal the Man started their Governors Ball set with a ‘Beavis & Butthead’ cartoon
When Portugal the Man took to the Bacardi stage at Friday’s Governors Ball Music Festival, they were sure to include some colorful, creative, and very “on-brand” special effects. During the concert, there was everything from two mannequins kissing to a cartoon baseball player.
Additionally, the performance began with a Beavis & Butthead cartoon, personalized with comments toward the rock band. This wouldn’t be the first time these cartoon characters had something to say about Portugal the Man. The band opened their 2018 with the same clip featuring Beavis & Butthead. In it, the characters critiqued the song “Feel It Still.”
“This whole video’s a crime scene,” Butthead said. “He’s not misunderstood. It is us who have misunderstood. This does suck, but this sucks so hard that it sucked a hole through the dimensional wall into awesomeness.”
“When you compress this much crap under the force of this much pretension, you create a beautiful diamond,” he continued. ‘This is the greatest band that has ever walked the Earth, but they do not walk the Earth, they float above it, for they are as Gods. They are better than The Beatles, better than The Rolling Stones, better than Silverchair, almost as good as Pantera. They are our rightful lords and masters. Ladies and gentlemen, bow down to the greatest band in the world, Portugal. The Man.”
For an hour, this band performed original songs at the music festival, including “Atomic Man” and “Modern Jesus.” There was also a cover of the David Bowie song “Moonage Daydream” and Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” Of course, this band ended their set with their hit song “Feel It Still.”
