‘Power Book II: Ghost’: Brandy Wants to Join Show: ‘I Played a Whole Gangster’ Before
Brandy has incredible range, not just as a singer, but as an actor. Her versatility has been proven in a variety of projects across TV and film, from playing a Disney princess in 1997’s Cinderella to a lyrical master in the ABC series Queens. Now, she’s looking to take those talents to Starz on its hit series Power Book II: Ghost.
Brandy is open to appearing on ‘Power Book II: Ghost’
Brandy’s comments came in a Deadline interview about Queens. The series starred her, Eve, Naturi Naughton, and Nadine Velazquez as the Nasty B******, a girl group from the ’90s. They broke up at the height of their success due to infighting within the group and haven’t spoken in the two decades since. But when presented with a lucrative reunion opportunity, they can’t turn it down. The show ran for one season before being canceled in May.
In the interview, published before the show’s cancelation, the reporter mentioned the possibility of Brandy joining Naughton over on the Power spinoff Power Book II: Ghost.
“You know what? Don’t tempt me,” she said. “I got some skills for Power. I don’t know if you watched Star but I played a whole gangster on there. I’m sure I can work some magic over there with 50 Cent and all those guys.”
It doesn’t appear that 50 Cent, an executive producer on the show, has publicly responded to her remarks. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reached out to his representatives for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
‘Power Book II: Ghost’ is a ratings hit
Released in September of 2020, Ghost picks up after the events of Power, which starred Omari Hardwick as a drug dealer trying to build a legitimate life for his wife Tasha (Naughton) and their kids.
Ghost focuses on his son Tariq after — spoiler! — Ghost’s death, following him as he starts to sell drugs like his dad. This leads to Tariq working with the Tejada crime family, putting him on a very dangerous path. The cast of Power Book II: Ghost includes Michael Rainey Jr., Method Man, Mary J. Blige, Larenz Tate, and Woody McClain, among others.
The show debuted to immediate success, quickly earning a season 2 renewal. It is now in its third season, which is expected to air in the fall of 2022.
But Naturi Naughton is no longer on the show
Naughton departed the show around the same time she started working on Queens, but show creator Courtney Kemp has said she could return.
“I feel like it’s not complete,” she told Entertainment Weekly of Tasha’s story, which ended with her in witness protection. “Although, now you see a big piece of what Tariq’s overarching story will be going forward, which is, he is going to really be looking for the reunification of his family — how is he going to join them? The most important thing when you set up a series is, what does the character want? And Tariq wants his family back. So we’ll see.”
