‘Power Book II: Ghost’: Larenz Tate Previews His Season 2 Storyline
Larenz Tate is back for the second season of Power Book II: Ghost, the Power spinoff about James St. Patrick’s son, Tariq. The actor plays Rashad Tate, a New York City councilman looking to advance his career. Determined to make it to the top, Rashad embarks down a path that’ll indeed provide opportunities but could expose him to big legal implications. The actor spoke more about what to expect from him this season in interviews.
Rashad Tate’s story in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’
Released on Nov. 21, the Power Book II: Ghost Season 2 premiere finds Rashad sulking after losing his bid to become New York’s next governor. Motivated by a conversation with his brother, Rashad figures his best option is to try and steal Rick Sweeney’s congressional seat. But he needs dirt on him to be able to force him out. That’s complicated since Sweeney appears to lead a clean life, but Rashad trusts he’ll unearth something.
“You’re going to continue to see a determined Rashad Tate,” Tate told HollywoodLife when asked for details. “There are some bumps in the roads, some serious hurdles, there’s some road blocks. He has to find a way to approach it differently but still keeping up with the antics that we have grown to love and to also hate.”
“You’re going to find him sort of at the bottom,” he continued. “Because he loses the gubernatorial, he’s out of it and he’s trying to deal with failure, and failure is just not an option for him. He has to find a way to win and move up that political ladder.” And he’ll do “whatever he needs to do” to make it happen, Tate told Digital Spy.
Tate said Tariq could be ‘part of his agenda’
In Power Book II: Ghost Season 2 Episode 2, Rashad gets a visit from Simon Stern. He wonders if Simon has any information on Sweeney, but Simon would prefer they discuss Carrie Milgram. He gets Rashad to agree to co-chair one of her courses at Stansfield University, where Rashad reunites with Tariq, who asks for help in family court.
While Rashad initially wanted to distance himself from the St. Patrick family, he decides to help Tariq in exchange for information on the Westons, who are friends with Sweeney. Tate said that in Rashad’s mind, he’s wondering if it’s “going to be the same kind of dynamic that Rashad had with James St. Patrick and how he can utilize this young man to get to the next level and be part of his agenda.”
But there’s a problem
At the same time, Rashad might not want to get involved with Tariq now that he’s catching attention for his ties to the late Professor Jabari Reynolds.
“I mean, the real question is, can he get caught up in that mess?” Tate said to Digital Spy. “Will he allow himself to get caught up in that mess? And also, the real thing that we will have to discover when you watch it, does he know?”
“Right? Does he know?” he continued. “I mean, the beauty about watching a show like this that seems real and all this stuff. The audience knows things that characters may not know. So the audience is a little bit ahead of everybody else and they sort of go along the main person’s, the main character’s journey, which is Tariq and his journey is going to intersect with so many people and of course, Rashad.”
“He can’t be on the show and not connect on some level,” he added. “It is what it is. It’s gonna be, it’s gonna be fireworks, it’s gonna be good, for sure.”
