‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Star Teases Ghost’s Return

Omari Hardwick played James "Ghost" St. Patrick, a businessman by day and drug kingpin by night, for all six seasons of 'Power' before being killed off in the series finale. But there are ways he could be back for one of the spinoffs. Here's what one actor said when asked about the possibility of a Ghost cameo.

He may have been killed off, but the Power shows are known to have supernatural elements, which means there’s an opportunity for James “Ghost” St. Patrick to return.

Omari Hardwick, known for his roles in projects such as the 2021 zombie flick Army of the Dead, played Ghost for all six seasons of Power before being murdered in cold blood by his son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) in the series finale. While it’s unclear if there are any official plans to bring him back, comments made in the spinoff Power Book II: Ghost suggest he could return in a future episode of the show.

Here’s what Rainey said when asked about the possibility of a Ghost cameo in Power Book II: Ghost.

Ghost’s death in ‘Power’ revisited

Throughout Power, fans were told that Ghost’s story would end in either one of two ways: jail or death. Still, that didn’t make it any less shocking when he was betrayed and killed in Power Season 6. Angry with Ghost for repeatedly failing to keep his word, Tariq ambushed and fatally shot him one night at his club, Truth.

Power Book II: Ghost begins shortly after Ghost’s death, picking up on Tariq as he navigates his new life. Needing money to help his mom, who’s been jailed for the murder, Tariq begins selling drugs just like his father and becomes involved with a dangerous crime family led by Monet Tejada.

Realizing his involvement in Ghost’s death, Monet asks Tariq about the murder at the end of the first season. Tariq admits to killing him, but in the same breath adds, “Ghosts never die.”

Rainey on a possible Ghost cameo in his spinoff

When Digital Spy asked Rainey about the possibility of a Ghost cameo, he responded, saying: “Listen, who knows. Who knows, who knows.”

It’s not a definitive answer, we know. But he did say viewers would find out what Tariq meant in his comment to Monet. “You know how Tariq said to Monet at the end of episode 10, season one, he’s like, ‘He may not be here anymore, but ghosts never die’? Yeah. Y’all gonna see the definition of that line in this season,” he teased.

Rainey’s comments come after Hardwick said he would definitely return to the role if asked.

“I would come back,” he said on the podcast Higher Learning With Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay. “But perhaps in a spinoff just in a space to give leverage to the show to go, OK, Ghost is speaking to Tariq, but we know he’s not actually there. OK, Ghost is in Tommy’s head, but is he really there? You know, just leaving that mystique. But I’d always be open. [Power] changed my life.”
