‘Power Book II: Ghost’: Why Is Monet so Unhappy All the Time?
Power Book II: Ghost Season 2 has expanded the world around the Tejada crime family. At the center stands Monet Tejada, (Mary J. Blige) a drug queenpin who rules her children, Cane (Woody McClain), Diana (LaToya Tonodeo), and Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray) with an iron fist. Monet also has Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) and her nephew Zeke (Daniel Bellomy) under her thumb.
However, Monet didn’t expect her husband Lorenzo (Berto Colon) to be released from prison, nor did she expect to rekindle things with her old flame Mecca (Daniel Sunjata). With so much happening in her life, why is Monet so deeply unhappy?
Why is Monet Tejada so heartless on ‘Power Book II: Ghost’?
Though Monet has had soft moments, especially when it comes to Dante/Mecca, she’s spent the majority of her time on screen with a frown on her face. Now, Blige is explaining why her character is so heartless. “She’s a queenpin, drug dealer, boss, and she’s a mama bear, she’s protecting her children but she’s also dark-hearted and ruthless,” Blige said during a press conference via Express. “If you don’t listen to her, anybody can get it, her kids, her husband, anybody could get it. “So she’s really a dark person with a heart – she’s a power seeker so that’s it. If anybody gets in her way with their power, that’s it, they’re going down.”
Blige also explained that Monet’s temperament is extremely authentic. “Everyone woman I know is a Monet, a hustler, my mum’s a hustler, a single-parent mum raising all of her children by herself in a hood, male-dominated,” she said via Express. “I was completely inspired by everything I grew up around and it was easy to find that real character, to make this character come to life.”
Courtney Kemp revealed why Monet is so unhappy all the time
Before Power Book II: Ghost fans learned that Lorenzo would be released from prison, and even before we knew Mecca’s role in Monet’s life, Blige explained that her character had one goal in season 2.
“Monet is really looking for a legit and a safe way to live and protect her children,” Blige told Entertainment Tonight. “She’s trying to figure a way out because she knows that if she stays in, it’s death or jail, and that’s not what she’s building this empire for. She’s building an empire so it can grow in a more legit way, like a safer way instead of the drug game.”
Now Power Universe creator Courtney Kemp is explaining why Monet is so unhappy all of the time. “Monet had moments of happiness, but now that Lorenzo is back he’s messing up everything,” she said in a recent Instagram Live.
Lorenzo has already vetoed Monet’s idea about retiring from the drug game and living off of Zeke’s NBA success, this means that her family remains in danger. Now that Monet has rejected Mecca, it also means that her secrets are threatening to bubble to the surface.
Will Monet kill Mecca?
With Lorenzo home and Mecca having gone rogue and confusing Zeke, Monet is going to do everything in her power to protect her family. Since we know there is a big death coming in episode 208, we have a feeling that she’s going to enlist her children, specifically Cane, to eliminate Mecca as a threat in her life.
If that doesn’t work, Monet might turn her ire on Lorenzo. After all, the kingpin’s release from prison seems to be the major source of most of Monet’s destress. “Lorenzo has been calling the shots for the drug organization — even from inside,” the Starz press release reads. “But as Monet continues to flex her independence — and a desire to protect her kids from the game– Lorenzo’s need to control brings them into conflict. Lorenzo becomes intrigued by some secrets Monet has been keeping from him.”
Prior to her husband’s release, her secret about Zeke was safe, and she had plans to ride off into the sunset to Mecca, making sure that her children were taken care of for life.
