‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’: 50 Cent Just Explained the Biggest Difference Between the Show and ‘BMF’
Power Book III: Raising Kanan will come to a thunderous conclusion when the season 1 finale airs. Though fans have to wait until November for the debut of Power Book II: Ghost Season 2, TV mogul, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is filling in the gap. The Power Universe executive producer will debut his new show BMF on Starz. Like Raising Kanan, the series is set in the past and chronicles the lives of young people amid the height of the crack cocaine epidemic.
On the surface, the two shows might seem similar, however, they couldn’t be more different. Now, 50 Cent has explained the biggest difference between BMF and Raising Kanan.
When will ‘BMF’ premiere on Starz?
BMF will premiere on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. on Starz airing directly after the season 1 finale of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. However, for those who have the Starz app, the series will be available at midnight. Set in Detroit in the 1980s, BMF chronicles the real-life story of the Flenory brothers. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest” Flenory stepped into the drug game just as crack cocaine was spreading across the country.
They built their empire BMF, or Black Mafia Family, and were able to stay at the top of their game into the early 2000s by getting into the music industry. The brothers formed BMF Entertainment as a money-laundering scheme. As a cover, they worked as promoters for several major hip-hop artists.
Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., the son of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, will portray his father in the show. Meanwhile, Da’Vinchi will portray Terry. The series also includes Russell Hornsby, Michole Briana White, Ajiona Alexus, Wood Harris, Steve Harris, Snoop Dogg, and Serayah.
50 Cent explained the biggest difference between ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ and ‘BMF’
With three Power series out and two more on the way, it’s easy to see why people might compare the long-running universe with BMF. For Power Book III: Raising Kanan in particular, we see a young man stepping into the drug game, just like BMF. However, 50 Cent has explained the biggest difference between the two shows.
“Look at the difference between the mom and pop in BMF versus the mom in Raising Kanan,” he told Express. “She’s like the source of all that. The other two parents are just horrified by the thought of kids even doing something like that.”
As we know, Kanan’s (Mekai Curtis) mother, Raq (Patina Miller) has reluctantly begun to indoctrinate her son into her drug empire. In contrast, Meech and Terry’s parents will be wholly disgusted with their illegal activities.
Is the show connected to the ‘Power’ Universe?
Though BMF and the Power Universe have similar themes, they aren’t connected in any way. BMF is based on a true story while the characters in the Power Universe are purely fictional. Additionally, while BMF is set in Detroit in the 1980s, the Power Universe is set in New York and opens with Raising Kanan in the 1990s.
Additionally, Power creator Courtney Kemp is not connected to the series in any way, this is a 50 Cent project that he created along with director/actor Tasha Smith, and executive producer, writer, and Detroit native Randy Huggins. Still, Power fans will recognize one familiar face in BMF.
Lala Anthony who portrayed LaKeisha Grant in the original Power will be seen in BMF. Deadline is reporting that Anthony will portray Markaisha Taylor, the wife of a drug dealer who gets close to Terry. Apparently, their connection will comprise everything that Terry and Big Meech have built.
