‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’: Will 50 Cent Narrate the Show?
Courtney A. Kemp and 50 Cent’s Power Universe is only getting bigger. On the heels of the original series and its first spinoff, Power Book II: Ghost, which chronicles Ghost’s (Omari Hardwick’s) son, Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), as he navigates life as a college student and a rising drug dealer, the next spinoff in the series, Power Book III: Raising Kanan is already garnering a ton of buzz.
Kanan (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) was a major character in the original Power series. He grew up with Ghost and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) and was very close to them in his late teens and early 20s until they betrayed him, landing him in jail.
Raising Kanan is set to give us some new insight into the character, who became one of the most diabolical forces in the Power Universe, but will 50 Cent also narrate the show?
What will ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ be about?
Set in the ’90s in Jamaica Queens, New York, Raising Kanan (portrayed here by Mekai Curtis) follows a 15-year-old Kanan before he meets Tommy and Ghost. 50 Cent called the series a window into Kanan’s “innocence phase”.
“You’ll see his very first fight—things that eventually turned him into the character that you see in Power,” he told Deadline. “It touches time periods where the music, the feel of the series is just exciting. It’s in the ‘90s; late ‘80s to early ‘90s in hip-hop.”
Kemp gave further insight into the series. “It’s a very different show in terms of pacing and feel,” she told Deadline. “It does feel like Power, you definitely feel the Power of that in that show, the capital P Power, but it also has its own small p power in the story that it’s telling and in its time, and you want to make sure that the audience feels that as well.”
When will ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ premiere?
In addition to Curtis, the rest of the cast of Raising Kanan includes Omar Epps, Joey Bada$$, Patina Miller, London Brown, Shanley Caswell, Malcolm Mays, Toby Sandeman, Lovie Simone, and Hailey Kilgore. Recurring stars include Quincy Brown, Natalee Linez, Ade Chike Torbert, and Annabelle Zasowski.
Raising Kanan will debut on Starz July 18, 2021.
Will 50 Cent narrate ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’?
In the teaser trailer for Raising Kanan, 50 Cent acts as the narrator. “You already know how my sh*t ended, this is how it started,” he says. “This is my story. This is a Southside, Jamaica Queens story.”
Now fans believe the rapper/actor/producer might narrate the entire series.
“Okay, I know it’s not gonna happen but imagine if 50 narrates book 3 But I feel like this would add to its 90s hood film vibe,” one Reddit user said via Express. Another fan added, “Like how Ace narrates Paid in Full or Kane narrates Menace II Society.” A third fan commented, “That’s kinda a fye idea lowkey.”
