‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’: Will Raq’s Backstory Be Revealed in Season 2?
Power Book III: Raising Kanan opens in the ’90s and chronicles the coming-of-age story of Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis), the character made infamous by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. However, as much as this series is about Kanan, it’s also about his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas (Patina Miller).
The drug queenpin runs her organization with her brothers, Marvin (London Brown) and Lou Lou (Malcolm Mays) but will we learn more about Raq’s origin story in season 2?
Mekai Curtis says ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Season 2 has ‘wild’ storylines
Though season 1 ended with a bang, we are nowhere near being done learning about Kanan’s origin story. Curtis has promised that season 2 will be quite a journey. “The family’s in an entirely new space and different dynamic now, so it’s them navigating that and figuring out where they can step, where they can’t step,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a lot of complicated things going on. It’s wild.”
As we know, though Raq is winning at the moment, her plan to kill Detective Malcolm Howard (Omar Epps) and frame Unique (Joey Bada$$) didn’t exactly go according to plan.
Will Raq’s backstory be revealed in ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Season 2?
Thus far we know a little bit about Raq’s backstory. As a teen, she was in a faux relationship with the man Kanan knew as his father, Def Con Stark. In reality, Def Con could not be open with his sexuality, so he paid Raq to keep up appearances. During Def Con’s time in jail, Raq fell for another man. That man turned out to be an undercover cop, Malcolm Howard. Their romance resulted in Kanan’s birth. Raq deeply resent Malcolm for lying to her and preying on her. We also know that she didn’t really get into the drug game until 1986 following the death of her boyfriend, High Post. Raq eventually took over the family’s organization when Marvin was arrested.
Now that Kanan has failed to actually kill Malcolm, the truth about his paternity and more of Raq’s backstory are bound to come out.
50 Cent says we can even expect to hear some familiar names as the series presses forward. Namely, Ghost Tommy and Breeze. “Those characters could possibly pop up in Raising Kanan,” 50 Cent told Express. “We’re already on a journey, it explains the monster you saw in me playing Kanan. The trauma, everything he’s gone through.”
When will season 2 premiere?
The second season of Raising Kanan is currently being filming New York City. In addition to our favorite cast members returning, fans are also going to be introduced to more people in Kanan’s orbit. LeToya Luckett has been cast as Jukebox’s estranged mother Kenya. According to the Starz press release, Kenya has returned to Harlem after her plan to make it big in Los Angeles fails. Krystal Joy Brown will portray Renée Timmons, Marvin’s anger management therapist. Then, Paulina Singer will play Zisa, a stunning singer on Lou Lou and Crown’s (Quincy Brown) record label.
Queen Sugar actor Omar J. Dorsey is also joining the series as Cartier “Duns” Fareed, a charismatic businessman. “He’s an art dealer, among other things,” Dorsey told TV Line. “He’s a very colorful character with a Don King element to him. He uses all of these big, elaborate words and quotes Shakespeare. Cartier is so over-the-top, and Hollywood is so subdued. It’s a fun character to play.”
Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2 will likely debut in mid-2022.
