‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Won’t Feature Ghost and Tommy, Says Courtney Kemp
Power fans are excited for the spinoff Power Book III: Raising Kanan, but those hoping to see Ghost and Tommy probably shouldn’t hold their breath. Although some familiar faces will certainly show up, Power creator and showrunner Courtney Kemp has assured fans that Ghost and Tommy won’t be in it — at least, not right now.
‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ is all about Kanan Stark
Power Book III: Raising Kanan is set years before the events in the original series, exploring how Kanan Stark became the man we met in the early seasons of Power.
The show starts in 1991 when he’s 15 and living at home with his mother, who’s a drug dealer. Soon, he’s starting his own network, much to his mother’s displeasure. “These streets don’t play Kanan. That’s what I keep trying to tell you,” she tells him in the trailer. “But you don’t want to hear me, though.”

As far as why Ghost and Tommy aren’t featured, Kemp told TVLine she didn’t think it would be “interesting” because the two are still very young in 1991.
“A lot of people thought they wanted to see Ghost and Tommy as kids. But that’s not an interesting story to me,” she said. “With Ghost and Tommy, you know that they’re going to live.”
“We really get into what 50 Cent calls the golden era of drug dealing in South Jamaica Queens,” she continued. “You get to visit that time period, and I thought this was a much more interesting way of doing it.”
“I just hate being asked about Ghost and Tommy in the prequel,” Kemp added. “Ghost and Tommy are 10 years old at the start of this series. There is no conversation we need to have about them right now, because they are children in the fifth grade. And I know the whole Power universe is going to be like, ‘Where is Ghost and Tommy?’”
“But this is not a Ghost and Tommy origin story. That’s boring. Who cares?” she asked. “If you think about it, it’s not exciting. I rolled my eyes because it’s not a new story to tell. I will keep telling people they are 10 years old and their long division is shaky. They’ve got Trapper Keepers and protractors. They’re not in the game yet. They’re literally still playing games.”
But as the show progresses, it seems possible that Ghost and Tommy could make an appearance. Kemp previously told Deadline she would definitely “love” to see an adult Kanan on the show, but she wanted to ensure “that Raising Kanan itself has an opportunity to be its own series.”
